George L Smith

Overview

George L. Smith State Park is a serene retreat located in the heart of Georgia's coastal plain. This park is famous for its scenic millpond, where towering cypress trees draped in Spanish moss rise directly from the dark water. Visitors often find themselves enchanted by the stillness of the landscape and the historic charm of the Parrish Mill, a combination grist mill, sawmill, and cotton gin. It offers a peaceful atmosphere that feels worlds away from the hustle of highway travel.

Location & Surroundings

Nestled just outside of Twin City, GA, the park serves as a secluded sanctuary surrounded by rural farmland and pine forests. Its remote setting ensures dark night skies and a quiet environment, making it a perfect spot for those who enjoy nature photography or birdwatching. The landscape is dominated by the 412-acre millpond, which creates a unique wetland ecosystem that is both hauntingly beautiful and incredibly calm for visitors exploring the water's edge.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground provides well-maintained sites that accommodate both RVs and trailers with water and electrical hookups. Travelers will find comfort in the modern bathhouses and the availability of a dump station. Park features include:

  • Access to seven miles of trails for hiking and biking.
  • On-site rentals for canoes and kayaks to explore the millpond.
  • A playground and picnic shelters for family gatherings.

Navigating the well-marked water trails through the thick cypress knees and reflective blackwater is a highlight for every visitor.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

While the park itself is the main draw, the local area offers charming stops like the nearby town of Swainsboro. Guests can explore the historic covered bridge on-site, which dates back to 1880 and remains a centerpiece of the park's heritage. Fishing is a popular pastime here, with anglers often catching bass or bream. Additionally, the Ohoopee River is a short drive away, offering more opportunities for river-based recreation and exploring the unique sandhills of middle Georgia.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for paddlers and kayakers who want to lose themselves in a maze of ancient trees and calm waters. It is best suited for RVers who prefer a rustic and quiet environment over a high-activity resort. If you value historical landmarks and natural beauty, you will find this park deeply rewarding. It is a fantastic choice for families looking to disconnect or solo travelers seeking a contemplative space to enjoy the Great Outdoors.

Great place for fishing and apparently camping from what I've heard on that part. Clean. Respectful people that work there and take care of the place. Could even be a great learning place for kids and adults alike and 10 out of 10 recommend.

Beautiful state park! There is a covered bridge that provides great views of the water. If you want to rent a kayak to get out on the water, make sure you get there before 3:00. They stop renting them at 3:00 and they must be returned before 4:00.

This place is hauntingly beautiful, yet doesn't feel heavy or dark. It's almost surreal how beautiful it is. We will be going rv-ing here later this year. I will bring my weed eater, though. The grass was little high. South Georgia is known for it's rattlesnakes....and I want to be able to SEE what's in the grass. I highly recommend you go for either a day trip or like us, to camp. There's kayaking available, biking and hiking trails and a museum on site. Beautiful place!

The best flat water kayaking in GA. The park office has super friendly and helpful staff and the campground and it's bath house are well maintained. The beauty of this place shines it's brightest if you get on the water and explore the Cypress groves. 10/10

This park is like going to a shopping center..... you can find something to please everyone! There are activities to satisfy every person's outdoor desires. There is a primitive campsite, a site for RVs and there are cabins for those who don't want to rough it. There are plenty of picnic areas scattered about the park, most with grills. There is a children's play area with modern equipment. There's a couple of boat ramps for you to use. There's a trail for hikers, or you can rent a kayak or canoe. Parrish Mill and the covered bridge provide a nice backdrop. and don't forget about the wildlife! This is a great place for photography! There is so much more to say....... I will let my pictures provide the best views of the park.
