George Washington & Jefferson/Raccoon Branch

Overview

Raccoon Branch Campground offers a secluded escape within the expansive George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. Situated at the base of Dickey Knob, this campground provides a quiet, forested environment that serves as an excellent basecamp for exploring the high country of Southwest Virginia. Unlike high-traffic commercial resorts, this location focuses on providing a genuine nature experience for those looking to disconnect and recharge among mature hardwoods and fresh mountain air.

Location & Surroundings

Located near the small community of Sugar Grove, Virginia, the park is nestled in a lush valley defined by the South Fork of the Holston River. The surrounding landscape is dominated by steep ridges and vibrant forest canopies that provide ample shade during the summer months. Its position within the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area puts visitors within reach of some of the highest peaks in the state, offering a dramatic backdrop of rolling blue ridges and misty mountain mornings.

Amenities & Park Features

While the atmosphere is rustic, the campground accommodates modern travelers with several electric hookup sites suitable for smaller to mid-sized RVs. The facility is thoughtfully laid out with paved loops to help navigate the terrain. Featured amenities include:

  • Paved parking pads and sturdy picnic tables at every site.
  • Centrally located hand pumps for clean, potable water.
  • Easy access to well-maintained vault toilets and trash collection areas.

There is no dump station on-site, so visitors should plan their water management accordingly before arriving at this serene mountain getaway.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activity, as the park provides direct access to the Dickey Knob Trail, which rewards hikers with panoramic views of the Rye Valley. The nearby Virginia Highlands Horse Trail and the Appalachian Trail offer miles of exploration through diverse mountain ecosystems. A short drive takes visitors to Grayson Highlands State Park, famous for its wild ponies, or to the charming town of Marion for local dining, artisanal shops, and cultural history.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for nature photographers and hikers who prioritize trail access and quiet over resort-style amenities. It is a perfect fit for mid-sized RV owners looking for a cool mountain retreat during the humid summer months. If you appreciate the sound of wind through the trees and the proximity of the Appalachian backcountry, Raccoon Branch provides the peaceful, low-frills atmosphere that traditional campers and adventurous RVers crave.

We came in a few days after the campground reopened after cleaning up after Hurricane Helene. This was an amazing place to camp. There's a beautiful creek that runs right behind some of the sites, as well as hiking trails nearby. There was plenty of firewood. The camp host was very thoughtful and made sure to clear as many leaves and sticks from the tent sites as possible. One of my favorite spots we stayed at on our camping trip.

This is a favorite spot just minutes from my childhood home. I enjoy being able to slow all the way down and enjoy true ntouched nature as it was meant to be. The campground is small. My rig just barely fits at 35', and anything larger would not fit. Half the sites have water and 30 amp power and the rest are dry camping sites. All the driveways are paved and clear of trees. Starlink works ok here. Satellite connections are somewhat inconsistant due to heavy cloud cover at times.

No shower!!! Camping spots are okay. Most electric hookups are reserved. First come first serve policy, except reserved, but look at the dates on each spot. No cell service!!! No Wi-Fi. Property manager was cool. If you’re bicycling the TransAmerica east to west, from the camping spot, it’s a 5 mile steady climb. After that it’s smooth sailing down about 6 miles. Look for available spot first. $20 no electric $27 electric CASH ONLY Pets…probably more idk Pay in a envelope at front kiosk box and drop in metal cylinder Make sure to tear off your receipt and car mirror receipt on the front of the envelope.

It's a smaller campground located (a little too) close to a road, but it's beautiful. The electric/water sites are closer to the road, while the primitive sites are more near a stream that surrounds the rest of the campground. Included are two sets of restrooms and a dump station, water fill station and dumpster. There is plenty of firewood to be scavenged with much of it being pine, though. Dogs are allowed. In April 2022 the cost for a site was $20 ($10 with a special pass) plus $7 extra for an electric/water site. Cash only at the self pay station. We stayed at a site that put us near the stream and the road. While the road noise was there it didn't disturb our stay. The stream was pleasant to hear as we fell asleep, and it endlessly entertained the children during our stay. Next to the campground are a couple of trails that we found: 1. The horse trail that connects several locations throughout the area and 2. The Dickies Knob trail, which is a 5.5 mile out and back hike to the top of Dickies Knob. This moderate trail is gently sloped all the way to the top where you'll find what appears to be the foundation of a tower and a few markers. Views are great up there without leaves on the trees, but will become obscured as we move into May. Nice hike, would recommend highly. Finally, our camp host was amazing. He checked up on folks at the campground to make sure everyone was good. He was friendly and courteous; we enjoyed several conversations together.

It was a great campground when it was open, but is now closed due to facility issues.
