George Wyth

Overview

George Wyth State Park serves as a lush, green sanctuary nestled within the Waterloo and Cedar Falls metropolitan area. This state park offers a peaceful escape for RVers without requiring a long drive away from city conveniences. Known for its unique designation as a National Urban Wildlife Sanctuary, the park provides a rare balance of dense woodland scenery and easy access to urban centers. Whether you are passing through Iowa or looking for a basecamp to explore the Cedar Valley, this park offers a serene natural setting characterized by winding waterways and mature timber.

Location & Surroundings

The park is strategically positioned between the cities of Waterloo and Cedar Falls, Iowa. It is bordered by the Cedar River, providing a scenic backdrop for various outdoor activities. The landscape is defined by its four lakes—George Wyth, Fisher, Alice, and Brinker—which create a diverse ecosystem for local wildlife and migratory birds. Visitors will find themselves surrounded by dense forests and expansive water views, making it hard to believe that shopping and dining options are only a few miles away in the neighboring communities.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground provides a mix of electric and non-electric sites suitable for various RV sizes. The facilities are designed to support a comfortable stay while maintaining a connection to nature.

  • Access to 50-amp electrical hookups for modern motorhomes and travel trailers.
  • Modern restroom and shower facilities maintained for guest comfort.
  • A centralized dump station and potable water access for self-contained units.

Beyond the sites, the park is famous for its extensive network of paved multi-use trails, which connect directly to the larger Cedar Valley trail system.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw here, with opportunities for fishing, boating, and swimming at the designated beach area on George Wyth Lake. The park's proximity to the Cedar River makes it a prime spot for kayaking and canoeing. Just outside the park gates, visitors can explore the John Deere Tractor & Engine Museum in Waterloo or visit the vibrant downtown area of Cedar Falls. Families often enjoy the nearby Lost Island Waterpark, while history buffs can spend time at the Grout Museum District.

Who This Park Is Best For

George Wyth State Park is an ideal destination for active outdoor enthusiasts, particularly cyclists and birdwatchers who want to take advantage of the urban wildlife sanctuary status. It is a great fit for RVers who prefer a natural, state-park atmosphere over the commercial feel of a private resort. Because of its central location, it is also perfect for travelers who need a quiet place to stay while remaining close to the medical facilities, businesses, and cultural attractions found in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls area.

The parl closes November 1 so not another of activity. We were only here for the night. Restrooms were not open and only one other trailer. It is right on the river and a busy road. Close to the airport. Lots of traffic noise this morning. We love to stay here because it is close to town and your can go and get something to eat quickly. Will stop again on our way home in the spring.

I am a ham operator and did an activation at this park. Loved the lakes and the bathrooms were clean. A super cute state park and they also offer camping and have a boat dock for the boats for fishing.

The traffic from the highway is pretty loud so much so that if you are looking for piece and quiet I don't recommend it. I went fishing there a few times and didn't catch any fish. I used the kayak rental once. The service was fine. The playground area was fine. Used the grill recently for a party and it did the trick. It is pretty to drive around the lake for a minute in the Fall when the leaves are changing.

This park pretty much has it all. Nice little campground, though it can get kinda cramped when it's busy. But there's plenty to do away from the campsite. The park is quite large with trails, boat docks, multiple fishing jetties, a beach as well as kayak/paddle board rentals.

Very nice area, only issue we had was that someone else had taken out spot and it was 8:00 in the evening when we finally got to the campground. They had their tent set up and a fire going on in the pit. When we asked about them being in our spot they got in their car and drove away. The spot next to them was vacant so we parked in it.
