Giant City
Overview
Giant City State Park is a premier destination in Southern Illinois known for its unique geological formations and lush vegetation. Established in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the park offers a blend of historical charm and natural wonder. RVers often visit to explore the Giant City Streets, where massive sandstone bluffs create narrow corridors that feel like an ancient urban landscape. It serves as a peaceful, rustic retreat for those seeking a genuine outdoor escape within a well-maintained state park system.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in Makanda, IL, the park is nestled within the breathtaking Shawnee National Forest. The surrounding terrain is characterized by rolling hills and dense hardwood forests that transform with vibrant colors in the autumn. Its proximity to the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail makes it a scenic base camp for regional exploration. Travelers will find the atmosphere tranquil, with limited road noise and heavy tree canopies that provide excellent shade and a sense of seclusion during the warm Midwestern summers.
Amenities & Park Features
The park features a Class A campground offering electric hookups and level pads suitable for a variety of RV sizes. Travelers have access to a convenient dump station and centrally located shower houses with flush toilets and hot water. One of the most famous features is the Giant City Lodge, which provides a full-service restaurant known for its hospitality and architecture. While electricity is provided at individual sites, water is typically accessed at shared spigots throughout the campground loops.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Hiking is the primary draw here, specifically the Giant City Nature Trail, which showcases the park's namesake bluffs and towering rock walls. Visitors can also enjoy horseback riding through the park's dedicated equestrian trails or visit the nearby Makanda Boardwalk for local art and eclectic crafts. For those interested in regional culture, the area is home to numerous award-winning wineries and the vibrant college-town atmosphere of Carbondale is just a short drive to the north.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts and hikers who prioritize scenic beauty and physical activity over high-end resort luxuries. It is a fantastic choice for families looking for educational nature programs and a classic, quiet camping experience. If you appreciate historic stone architecture and quiet nights under a dense forest canopy, this state park is an essential stop for your Southern Illinois RV itinerary.

Really enjoyed this park but you need to drive to each of their trails. Wish we had eaten at the lodge which is really a cool place to see. It reminded me of the house in the TV show Yellowstone. The people who work at The Visitor Center are very nice and very helpful.

This is awesome, if you're into rocks, geology and overall history of the area then this is for you. This rugged 1 mile hike is like Super Mario Bro. Lost World where you can walk by the secret entrance and miss something cool. Yes please do this and take pics. Also this is a state park inside a national forest

I really love the variety of trails depending on the complexity and length of time, great for planning. The visiting center staff is very friendly and helpful. We had a great time hiking with our dog.

Relatively easy trails. Neat rock formations and overhangs. A few small streams. Nice park/picnic areas with restrooms (more like a portable potty). The lodge and welcome center are super nice facilities. There is a restaurant and some cabins also. My family had a great time hiking (ages 9-43)

This park is very neat! The nature trail hike is a tad rugged so if you have troubles walking on uneven ground this would be difficult. It rained today but we didn't have problems walking the trails. My kids and I really enjoyed this park. The Visitor Center was nice and had lots of information as well as some merch.
