Glacial Lakes
Overview
Glacial Lakes State Park offers a striking glimpse into Minnesota's geological past, characterized by the rolling prairie hills and deep glacial depressions known as kettles. Located just outside Starbuck, this park preserves a rare and vital ecosystem where the western tallgrass prairie meets the eastern hardwood forest. Visitors are often struck by the remarkable clarity of the water and the profound silence that pervades these ancient, wind-swept landscapes. It is a premier destination for those seeking a primitive and authentic connection to the natural history of the Midwest.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in the heart of Pope County, the park is defined by its dramatic glacial landforms, including kames and ridges that rise over 1,200 feet above sea level. The surrounding landscape is a beautiful patchwork of fertile agricultural land and shimmering, spring-fed lakes. This location provides a peaceful buffer from the hustle of larger metropolitan areas, offering a secluded environment where the starry night skies are exceptionally bright and unobstructed by urban light pollution. It feels like a hidden corner of the state where time slows down.
Amenities & Park Features
The park accommodates RV travelers with several electric hookup sites tucked into both wooded areas and open prairie sections. While the atmosphere is significantly more rustic than a typical commercial resort, the facilities are well-maintained. Key park features include:
- Modern shower houses and seasonally available flush restrooms.
- A convenient RV dump station and fresh water fill-up points.
- Seasonal rentals for canoes, kayaks, and paddleboats.
A major draw for visitors is Mountain Lake, which remains incredibly clear and serves as a centerpiece for non-motorized boating, swimming at the sandy beach, or fishing for panfish and northern pike.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts can explore over 16 miles of hiking trails that wind through some of the last remaining stands of virgin prairie and oak savannas in the region. Just a short drive from the park entrance, the town of Starbuck offers local dining and access to the expansive Lake Minnewaska, which is famous for its large public beach and excellent walleye fishing opportunities. During the winter months, these same trails transform into scenic routes for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, making it a year-round destination for adventure.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for nature photographers and dedicated birdwatchers who want to immerse themselves in a diverse and rare botanical landscape. Because the park emphasizes quietude and natural preservation, it is best suited for RVers who prefer scenic solitude and self-contained exploration over high-energy amenities or organized activities. Families and solo travelers looking for a classic Minnesota lake experience away from the heavy crowds of the northern woods will find this park to be a perfect, tranquil fit.

Clean, quiet and diverse. Tent camping, permanent cabins or horse tie out areas for equestrians. Prairie- trails/ flowers, lake- fishing or swimming/ boating or oak forests- shade/comfort and quiet all around. The group area has a huge shelter with an amazing fire-pit area with picnic tables- seating and lots of parking. Most all sites have cook- charcoal grill stands. Bathrooms are mostly out-houses with concrete foundations. Overall roads are nice and gravel is kept up. Signs are clear and easy to read/ directions to all campgrounds. We loved the gigantic dock with 2 Picnic tables, can't wait to have a lunch there! Book early! This park is always full!!!

Nice, quiet park, not very busy when we were there. Have a small swimming area and a place to rent kayaks, babies and paddle boards. The hiking club hike was very nice, as was Mardy's trail that goes around the lake. We've had a wet summer, so the mosquitos are bad, as well as flies. Three big snapping turtles live near the dock by the swimming area and lots of curious fish. Lots of benches and picnic tables to sit and enjoy the early fall!

Stayed 2 nights. Nice diagonal back in spaces with a lot of shade. Clean, quiet. Good hiking club trail ~ about 3.0 mile loop from lower camp ground.
