Glacier/Fish Creek
Overview
Fish Creek Campground offers one of the most authentic stays within the boundaries of Glacier National Park. Located on the western side of the park, it provides a serene escape under a thick canopy of cedar and hemlock trees. As the second-largest campground in the park, it provides a rustic yet managed environment for RVers looking to immerse themselves in the wild Montana landscape. This is a reservation-based facility, offering a reliable home base for those planning an extensive exploration of the park without the uncertainty of first-come, first-served sites.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just off Camas Road near the village of West Glacier, the park is nestled along the shores of Lake McDonald. The surrounding landscape is defined by dense forests and the rugged peaks of the Rocky Mountains. Travelers will find themselves within walking distance of the lake, where clear waters reflect the dramatic Big Sky. The location serves as a primary gateway to the Going-to-the-Sun Road, making it a strategic point for those wanting early access to the park high-elevation wonders and the Continental Divide.
Amenities & Park Features
While the park maintains a rustic atmosphere, it provides essential comforts including flush toilets and potable water throughout the loops. Each site is equipped with a fire ring and a picnic table, encouraging traditional evening campfires under the stars. While there are no electricity or water hookups at the individual sites, a dump station is conveniently located nearby at the Apgar Campground area. The roads are paved, and several loops are specifically designed to accommodate RVs and trailers up to 35 feet in length.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Adventure starts at the water’s edge with swimming, paddleboarding, and kayaking on Lake McDonald. Hikers can easily access the Rocky Point Trail, which offers stunning vistas of the lake and surrounding mountains with minimal elevation gain. A short drive or shuttle ride leads to the historic Apgar Village, where travelers can find boat rentals, gift shops, and casual dining. For those looking for iconic scenic drives, the Logan Pass Visitor Center is reachable by car, offering opportunities to spot mountain goats and bighorn sheep.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for the nature-centric traveler who prefers the sounds of the forest over the hum of a commercial resort. It is perfect for self-contained RVers who do not require hookups and appreciate the shaded privacy provided by the heavy tree cover. Families seeking a classic camping experience and wildlife enthusiasts wanting easy access to the park's interior trails will find it particularly rewarding. If your goal is to wake up inside the national park, Fish Creek is an unmatched choice.

Campground is in Glacier National Park - so you need a park pass for access and you need reservations (early - fills up fast). Campground was ok - campsites were well set up. However, the C loop restrooms were out of order (porta-potties available) and showers were only on the A loop (first come first served). Some late evening arrivals were a bit noisy, but overall, the camping was good. Ranger programs were all very good, available each evening.

Great campground in Glacier National Park. Quiet and away from crowds. Sites are close together but still offer a little privacy. Bear boxes are shared between 6-8 camp sites & when I arrived, the one near me was full. Every site should have their own since there are active bears in this campground. Showers only available in loop A & there's no parking there. I camped in loop C and we only had outhouse toilets due to restrooms being closed. I probably won't go back to this campground. The Fish Creek day use area is nice for lake access & clean restroom.

We stayed on the B loop and found it was a perfect fit for our Glacier trip. We had easy access to bathrooms, water, flat ground, and appreciated the ranger-led hike and evening programs offered. Cell connection was spotty but definitely possible at times. We used a 2 person tent while many in the loops were in RVs, but overall the immediate area was quiet. People seemed responsible with trash to mitigate bear incursions and the provided food lockers helped as well.

This campground was amazing. It was much quieter than Apgar, the hosts were very helpful and friendly, and the easy access to a less crowded shoreline of Lake McDonald. We loved our site, and wished we had of booked Fish Creek for all 3 nights, rather than 2 at Apgar.
Canadian mistake
Would not recommend if you are in glacier. I would not recommend west glacier for that matter. Apagar didn’t seem any good either. Some of the pull through sites are a joke. Incredibly tight, and very uneven. Trees in the way of where the slide goes, and rocks where the wheels sit. Had to exit through the passenger door when setting up.
