Grand Gulf Military Park & Campground

Overview

Grand Gulf Military Park & Campground offers a unique blend of American history and outdoor recreation. Located on the site of a once-booming river town that was significantly damaged during the Civil War, this park preserves the earthen remains of Fort Cobun and Fort Wade. It provides a quiet, reflective setting for RVers who appreciate staying within a historical landmark rather than a standard commercial resort. The atmosphere is peaceful and educational, making it a standout destination for those traveling through the Mississippi Delta.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just eight miles northwest of Port Gibson, MS, the park sits on the eastern bank of the Mississippi River. The surrounding landscape is defined by lush woodlands and the rugged loess bluffs characteristic of this specific region. Travelers will find the park easily accessible from the Natchez Trace Parkway, making it a convenient and scenic stop for those exploring the deep history and natural beauty of the South. The proximity to the river provides a humid, forest-like environment with plenty of shade.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features sites equipped with full hookups, including 30 and 50-amp electricity, water, and sewer connections. Visitors have access to several park facilities designed to make a stay comfortable and convenient:

  • Clean bathhouses and restroom facilities
  • On-site laundry room for long-term travelers
  • A comprehensive museum filled with Civil War artifacts
  • Relocated historic buildings and an observation tower

The park also includes a picnic pavilion and a dump station. Beyond the standard utility features, the park itself serves as a massive outdoor exhibit where guests can walk among cannons, trenches, and historic cemeteries.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

History buffs can spend hours exploring the park’s many outdoor exhibits, including the observation tower which offers panoramic views of the surrounding terrain. Just a short drive away, the Windsor Ruins offer a hauntingly beautiful look at the remaining Corinthian columns of what was once a massive antebellum mansion. The nearby city of Port Gibson is renowned for its well-preserved architecture and the iconic "hand pointing to heaven" atop the First Presbyterian Church, which is a must-see for any visitor to the area.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for history enthusiasts and couples looking for a peaceful, educational experience. It is well-suited for travelers who prefer a slower pace and smaller crowds over the high-energy atmosphere of a typical family fun-park. While the campground provides necessary modern utilities, its primary draw is its unique connection to the past. It is a memorable stop for those touring the historic sites of the South who want to wake up surrounded by the stories of the 19th century.

We camped here one night. Most everyone here seems to be a permanent resident. Staff was friendly enough. Some great views from the observation tower. Camp sites need a lot of work. I had to deal with a wasp nest to get water.

I came here for a family reunion, and at first I was skeptical about how far out in the countryside this was - but it was very nice. The small historical center had a friendly and knowledgeable curator. For us The Pavilion was the star of the show. It had nice seating, functional fans that really helped cool the place off, a fireplace that wasn't in use but looked interesting, and two sets of bathrooms that were easily accessed. The one big downside is there was absolutely no celular reception anywhere in the park. Occasionally I could get brief flashes of a single bar but it was impossible to call text or use the internet any where that I went.

We stayed in the lower campground. Bathhouse is surprisingly clean. Park is very pet friendly. Nature trails are a bit overgrown but still passable. Historic sites are interesting to see. Not just military stuff. The drive around the whole Park takes about 2 hours.
