Grand Mesa/Island Lake
Overview
Island Lake Campground offers a high-altitude escape on the magnificent Grand Mesa near Cedaredge, Colorado. Situated at an elevation of roughly 10,000 feet, this destination provides a cool respite from summer heat and serves as a gateway to the Grand Mesa National Forest. This is a quintessential mountain retreat where the focus remains on the surrounding wilderness and natural tranquility rather than urban convenience or modern luxury. It is a place where the air is thin, the stars are bright, and the scenic beauty of the world’s largest flat-top mountain takes center stage.
Location & Surroundings
Reaching the campground involves a breathtaking drive along the Grand Mesa Scenic Byway, which winds through diverse ecosystems and dramatic overlooks. Once you arrive, you are greeted by the shimmering waters of Island Lake, the largest of the hundreds of lakes found on the mesa. The landscape is characterized by dense stands of Engelmann spruce and subalpine fir, punctuated by open meadows that come alive with vibrant wildflowers during the short summer season. The surrounding terrain is relatively level on the mesa top, making it accessible for varied exploration.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional forest service site, the facilities here are designed to preserve the rugged atmosphere of the Colorado wilderness. Travelers will find vault toilets and potable water available throughout the camping loops. The individual sites are well-spaced to provide a sense of privacy and are equipped with heavy-duty picnic tables and fire rings, perfect for evening gatherings under the dark skies. Most sites are spacious enough to accommodate standard RVs, and the park features a convenient paved boat ramp for those looking to launch a craft onto the water for a day of exploration.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for visitors to this region, with activities centered on the water and the trails. Anglers frequently visit to cast for rainbow, brook, and cutthroat trout in the cold alpine waters of Island Lake. For hikers, the nearby Crag Crest National Recreation Trail offers a challenging loop with panoramic views of the Rockies and the canyonlands in the distance. The Grand Mesa Visitor Center is also a short drive away, offering interpretive displays about the unique volcanic geology and wildlife of the area.
Who This Park Is Best For
This location is best suited for adventurous RVers who value direct proximity to nature and do not require full hookups or resort-style amenities. It is a premier choice for fishing enthusiasts and boaters who want to be just steps away from the shoreline. If you seek a quiet, unplugged experience in a high-alpine environment where you can watch the sunrise over the water, this is the perfect destination for your next Colorado road trip.

We had a beautiful spot in the woods. Be forewarned....getting to the campground was treacherous. One lane very rocky road. No way out except back up the one lane road. Not sure what we will do if a trailer comes down the ONE LANE ROAD while we drive our trailer out.🙏

This campground was amazing. I could have stayed here for a week easily. We went paddleboarding a few times and on a hike around the lake. The views were stunning. My husband went fishing quite a few times in 2 days and kept catching and releasing fish. The camp hosts were so nice and informative. The only reason I took a star away was because the road coming down off of Grand Mesa scenic byway was meant to be a one way road but they had closed off the exit to work on it therefore it was 2 ways. It was so narrow that there was no way 2 rvs would be able to pass on it. The hosts were nice enough to go to the top and stop traffic coming down so we could leave. We also had spotty service there.

The camp ground is built around a wet bog as if to ensure the largest possible food supply for the millions of mosquitoes which live there. Most campsites have absolutely no view of the lake- much less easy access to it. The camp hosts this summer were super friendly and helpful and kept the many pit toilet bathrooms very clean. The tall trees are beautiful and each camp site has adequate space for camping and cooking and hanging out. Hammock opportunities abound. Cold potable water was available in late June. The nearby lodge has a small shop for some camping necessities and ice. Easy access to a couple of bike and hiking trails.

It was beautiful! Most sites had some nice tree cover. 10/10 would go again.

Great spot to camp on the Mesa. The campsites are very spacious and offer plenty of privacy. The camp hosts were available and friendly. We had the best time here.
