Grand Mesa/Ward Lake
Overview
Grand Mesa/Ward Lake offers a unique high-altitude retreat atop the world's largest flat-topped mountain. Situated within the Grand Mesa National Forest, this destination provides a serene escape from the summer heat of the Colorado valleys. The campground sits at an elevation of approximately 10,000 feet, where the air is thin, crisp, and scented with evergreen. It is a place where the pace of life slows down, allowing travelers to reconnect with the rugged beauty of the Rocky Mountains.
Location & Surroundings
Located near Cedaredge, CO, the park is accessed via the Grand Mesa Scenic and Historic Byway. The surroundings are defined by a dense canopy of Engelmann spruce and subalpine fir trees that frame the sapphire waters of Ward Lake. This area is known for its dramatic vistas and volcanic geology. Visitors will find themselves surrounded by hundreds of smaller lakes and rolling alpine meadows that burst with wildflowers during the short summer season.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a rustic forest service facility rather than a modern resort. Travelers should expect dry camping conditions as there are no electric or water hookups available at the sites. The campground provides essential amenities including:
- Access to vault toilets and hand-pumped potable water.
- Individual sites with heavy-duty fire rings and picnic tables.
- Dense tree cover providing natural privacy between neighboring RVs.
While big rigs may find some sites tight, the loop is designed to accommodate moderately sized units looking for a traditional wilderness experience.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for this region. Anglers can enjoy lake fishing for trout right from the shore of Ward Lake or explore the numerous nearby waterways. For hikers, the Crag Crest National Recreation Trail offers a challenging trek with panoramic views of the San Juan Mountains and the Book Cliffs. The nearby Grand Mesa Visitor Center provides educational exhibits and local history, making it a great starting point for those new to the plateau.
Who This Park Is Best For
This location is ideal for self-contained RVers who appreciate solitude and natural beauty over modern luxuries. It is a perfect fit for photography enthusiasts, birdwatchers, and those seeking a primitive camping experience in a cool climate. If your travel style involves disconnecting from digital distractions and spending your evenings around a campfire under a brilliant canopy of stars, Ward Lake is an excellent choice for your Colorado itinerary.

We stayed for five days in spot #22. Cleanest bathrooms in Grand Mesa! Thank you, Dan. Great, friendly, knowledgeable camp host. Plenty of space at each site. There are a few water spigots around and the water is pretty good. Lost of walking and hiking, fishing, and easy kayak access. No obstructions for Starlink. No power either, bring your own. No dump nearby. Great place!

The campgrounds were clean. Some sites have their own water spigots. The vault toilets were well maintained. The camp host was wonderful to chat with. I loved being near the lake!

Beautiful views and a great lake. My second time staying here. Try staying lower down if your rig has solar. Better view of the sky.

B-E-A-UTIFUL! Crisp air, very, and I mean meticulous maintained facilities, and plenty of space to get out of the hustle. I'll be back!

We were just driving in for a bit, did not stay but the scenery was amazing! It was very beautiful, clean and quiet. There was a lodge with cabins, campground, people fishing, kayaking and paddle boarding but not over populated. Definitely on our list to camp at in the future.
