Great Plains

Overview

Great Plains State Park offers a rugged and scenic retreat located on the shores of the Tom Steed Reservoir in southwestern Oklahoma. This park is a hidden gem for travelers who appreciate the unique contrast between the rolling plains and the ancient, rocky outcroppings of the Wichita Mountains. Situated a short drive from Altus and the Texas border, it serves as a peaceful destination for those looking to reconnect with nature while enjoying reliable facilities in a tranquil, lakeside environment.

Location & Surroundings

Situated near Mountain Park, OK, the park is defined by its proximity to the Wichita Mountains range. The landscape features massive granite boulders and diverse wildlife, creating a stunning backdrop for any RV stay. The vast expanse of the reservoir dominates the view, providing cool breezes and a sense of isolation from the hustle of city life. Travelers can enjoy the wide-open skies that make this region famous for spectacular sunsets and exceptional stargazing opportunities.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is well-equipped for modern travelers, offering 56 RV sites that include options with full hookups as well as water and electric-only sites. Visitors have access to clean comfort stations with showers, ensuring a comfortable stay even in a more remote setting. For those traveling with families, the swimming beach and playgrounds offer plenty of afternoon recreation. Boaters and jet skiers will appreciate the multiple ramps that provide easy access to the water for a full day of exploration.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw here, with the reservoir being a premier hotspot for fishing and boating. Anglers often visit the area to catch hybrid stripers, crappie, and catfish. On land, the park features the Granite Trail, which is perfect for hiking and mountain biking through the rocky terrain. For a short day trip, the nearby Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge offers additional opportunities for spotting buffalo, longhorn cattle, and elk in their natural habitat.

Who This Park Is Best For

Great Plains is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts who prioritize natural beauty and water-based activities over luxury resort amenities. Great RV site. Large pads and you're not on top of your fellow campers. Beautiful clean park. We stayed 10 days. Had full hook ups. The lake is beautiful. Lots of Canadian geese. We could hear the coyotes at night. There is so much to do around the surrounding areas. Wichita Mountains is a must see! Great Plains State Park ranks as one of our favs!

We have camped twice at this state park and we will go again. It is a beautiful place. The camping sites are wonderful! They have everything from tent sites to full hookups. They even have a handicap site! We had no problem finding a site long enough for our 43' class a coach. Oh!, and the fishing was excellent! This is an excellent place to relax.

Our second visit here. The people are awesome, the campsites are great. We met family there and they had no electricity but the park took care of it immediately. This is a great place to relax, walk, fish, boat, kayak, whatever you want to relax. We will return often.

We have camped here for Memorial Day weekend for 2021, 2022 and 2024. The restrooms by the boat ramp don't flush very well. They were old in in 2022. I was hoping they would be replaced by this time like all the other state parks. The restrooms in the otter creek campground are hot/stuffy and need ventilation. The showers require quarters to operate and are also very hot/stuffy and need ventilation. In 2022 our campsite had a water spigot. The water spigot is now gone. The receipt says it was a "premium" campsite for $22. It has no water spigot nor electric. Not sure what is so "premium" about it? We feel like a paid campsite should come with tokens for the shower. We are hikers not boaters so hopefully we can get a spot at the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge next time. On the plus side, we saw a road runner multiple times and learned his call. Lots of other birds too like scissor tail fly catcher. Only a 30 minute drive to the Wildlife Refuge where we wanted to hike. There's always a breeze to keep you cool.
