Greenbo Lake State Resort Park
Overview
Greenbo Lake State Resort Park offers a serene escape within the rolling hills of northeastern Kentucky. Known for its centerpiece, the 225-acre Greenbo Lake, the park provides a classic state resort experience where nature and comfort meet. It is named in part after the Jesse Stuart State Nature Preserve, honoring the famous local author whose heritage is deeply woven into the park's atmosphere. Visitors often find that the combination of literary history and pristine wilderness creates a unique, thoughtful environment for a getaway.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in Greenup, KY, the park is tucked away in the Appalachian foothills, offering a quiet retreat from the bustle of urban life. The landscape is dominated by dense hardwood forests and the shimmering, motor-restricted waters of the lake. While the park feels delightfully remote, it remains easily accessible from major routes like US-23. This makes it a convenient and scenic stop for those exploring the tri-state region where Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia converge near the Ohio River.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground features 58 sites equipped with water and electric hookups, accommodating various RV sizes with ease. Guests have access to modern bathhouses, a dump station, and a grocery store for daily essentials. Beyond the campsites, the park boasts a large swimming pool, miniature golf, and a marina. Because gasoline motors are prohibited on the lake, the marina specializes in pontoon and pedal boat rentals, ensuring the water remains quiet and clean for all guests.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts can explore over 30 miles of multi-use trails designed for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. The lake is a premier destination for fishing, stocked regularly with rainbow trout and home to largemouth bass and bluegill. For a change of pace, the nearby city of Ashland offers the Highlands Museum and Discovery Center. History buffs may also enjoy exploring the various local landmarks and small-town charm found throughout Greenup County, which inspired much of Stuart’s writing.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for families and nature lovers who appreciate a slower pace and a wide variety of organized outdoor activities. Because the lake restricts loud gasoline engines, it remains remarkably peaceful, making it a perfect fit for kayakers and anglers seeking tranquility. It is well-suited for RVers who want the reliable amenities of a resort park, such as paved pads and recreation facilities, without sacrificing the authentic woodland experience of the Kentucky wilderness.

We arrived late and left early. Only issue was we thought we had booked a 2 queen room and got 2 doubles. Was cramped but worked for the night. We love state parks so the age and etc… of the rooms was expected. It was clean and comfy. We will go back at a later date to see more of the park.

We hiked the fern valley trail. It was pretty easy. Well suited for little ones and adults. There’s a few spots near the lake where you might have to help smaller kids but our daughter and her friend managed well enough. Saw a lot of little toads on the trail. Lots of butterflies and squirrels. We managed to see a Heron fishing and flying. That made the trip in my opinion. We walked around the lodge. Not too much to see in there. Looks like a decent enough place to stay. Staff wasn’t very friendly but I guess you can’t expect much out of government employees having to work a holiday.

What a beautiful place! The lake is clean and green. We enjoyed walking the trails and seen lots of deer. Definitely coming back. Might not stay in the lodge next time though. Our room 204 had a strong mold odor coming out of the air conditioner. Spores flying. We had a fan in the car. So we used that instead. Much better. I mentioned the issue to management. And she refunded me a little bit, for the inconvenience. Hopefully they will replace that air unit soon. As far as the restaurant, the food is great. I had the catfish dinner. Large portion and really tasty.

The park is beautiful. The Charm is lost at the lodge buffet. It's not even a real buffet. They use chafing dishes. No sneeze guards. That's already a issue. They don't take credit/debit cards. Who does that. As for the food quality, it's overpriced limited selection & not really that good. The lemon cake I had was either stale or freezer burned. They had fish but no hush puppies. As for the salad bar. It's alright but again very limited. It's a great place to enjoy some family time. Just bring your own food.

Beautiful setting and lodge with restive, reflective ambience. Ashland area among the best of Kentucky hills and old forests. Friendly staff. Seriously good restaurant in the lodge. Rooms are comfortable and spacious, and will be even better with a modest upgrade.
