Gros Morne/Green Point

Overview

Green Point Campground is a premier destination within Gros Morne National Park, offering a quintessential coastal Newfoundland experience. Known for its world-class geological significance, this campground provides a rugged yet accessible base for exploring the northern reaches of the park. It is a place where the rhythmic sound of the Gulf of St. Lawrence replaces the noise of city life, making it a favorite for those seeking a deeper connection with nature.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just twelve kilometers north of the town of Rocky Harbour, NL, the park sits on a coastal terrace overlooking the sea. The landscape is defined by the iconic tuckamore trees, which are evergreens stunted and twisted into unique shapes by the persistent salt spray and wind. This unique positioning offers campers unobstructed views of the horizon and direct access to the famous Green Point geological cliffs, which showcase millions of years of history.

Amenities & Park Features

As a Parks Canada facility, Green Point focuses on preserving the natural environment while providing essential comforts. The park offers drive-in RV sites that are generally level and gravel-based, accommodating various rig sizes. While the sites are unserviced, the facility provides high-quality amenities including flush toilets and hot showers. A communal kitchen shelter is available for food preparation and social gatherings, and an RV sanitation station is located nearby for convenience.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Staying at Green Point places you in the heart of the action, only a short drive from the iconic Western Brook Pond fjord boat tour. Visitors can also explore the historic Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse or spend an afternoon in Rocky Harbour enjoying local seafood and folk music. For active travelers, the area offers diverse hiking trails ranging from gentle coastal walks to the demanding ascent of the Gros Morne Mountain trail.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for self-contained RV travelers who prefer natural beauty and tranquility over commercial resort amenities. It is a perfect match for photographers, nature enthusiasts, and families who want a front-row seat to the dramatic Newfoundland coastline. If you value stunning ocean sunsets and a peaceful, wind-swept atmosphere as the backdrop for your trip, Green Point is an excellent choice for your national park itinerary.

This is a small campground, but by far the best place to stay within the Gros Morne NP. There are only 10 serviced sites (water, electricity), all with breathtaking views of the sea. They are also exposed to western and north winds, so maybe not a best choice in severe weather. The remaining not serviced sites (only about 20 or do of them) are all wind sheltered and private. The washrooms and showers are very clean and comfortable. There is a sheltered meeting/kitchen area with WiFi, tables and a stove.

This is one of my most favourite campgrounds in a long while. The small number of campsites were reminiscent of several decades ago. Yet, having the individual water per site, the O-Tentik and modern washrooms created much needed comfort. The camp beach is a great place to watch the sunset. The geological site is a short walk away.

Facility has very clean bathrooms/showers, WiFi, tables and sinks to clean kitchenware. Camping spots are nice, especially those next to the water. Cheap wood. The 4 nights we spent there were definitely worth it.
