Gros Morne/Lomond
Overview
Located within the iconic Gros Morne National Park, Lomond Campground offers a peaceful retreat on the shores of Bonne Bay. This destination is defined by its dramatic mountain views and lush forest canopy, providing a classic Newfoundland wilderness experience. Unlike the busier hubs of the park, Lomond provides a sense of seclusion and a direct connection to the UNESCO World Heritage landscape that surrounds it, making it a favorite for those seeking tranquility.
Location & Surroundings
Situated near Wiltondale and just a short drive from the historic community of Woody Point, the park sits on the East Arm of Bonne Bay. The surrounding terrain is characterized by steep, forested hills and the deep blue waters of the fjord. RVers will appreciate the scenic drive along Route 431, which offers some of the most striking coastal vistas in the province. The park's location provides a unique vantage point of the Long Range Mountains meeting the sea.
Amenities & Park Features
Lomond is a rustic facility that prioritizes the natural environment over modern frills. While it does not offer electrical hookups, it provides essential comforts to ensure a pleasant stay for self-contained travelers:
- Modern washrooms with hot showers and flush toilets are centrally located.
- Several large kitchen shelters offer protected spaces for cooking and gathering.
- A dedicated boat launch provides easy access to the bay for kayaking and motorized vessels.
These features allow visitors to enjoy a primitive camping experience while still having access to clean, reliable facilities.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The campground serves as a primary gateway to the south side of the national park. Guests are steps away from the Stanleyville Trail, a popular hike leading to an abandoned townsite and a hidden beach. A short drive takes visitors to the otherworldly Tablelands, where you can walk on the Earth's mantle. Additionally, the nearby town of Woody Point offers local crafts, charming dining options, and a glimpse into the region’s rich cultural heritage through its waterfront boardwalk.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal choice for self-contained RVers and nature enthusiasts who prefer a quiet, backcountry atmosphere over a resort-style experience. It is particularly well-suited for those looking to explore the Tablelands and Discovery Centre without the long drive from the park’s north side. If your travel style favors starlit nights, morning paddles, and easy access to world-class hiking, Lomond is a perfect fit for your Newfoundland itinerary.

10/10 camping experience. The weather was a bit soggy but the views were incredible. Small campground with everything you need in close proximity. Options to camp or rent a cabin, due to the time of year we really had most of the place to ourselves. I will definitely be back.

Stopped here on bicycle while touring Newfoundland. Really fantastic campground. The scenery is phenomenal, the swimming is good, almost all of the sites I saw had plenty of grass for tent setups as well as good condition picnic tables. The facilities are also very new here with extremely clean and modern washrooms, showers, and group shelter.

Lomond Park is stunning. We have camped here many times over the years. There are many reasons for this...it's clean, safe, well maintained, friendly staff, stunning scenery, quiet and overall very convenient to travel to other places in the park. Two years in a row we are stayed at their cabins. They are comfortable and clean. They have a double bed with a plastic mattress and surprisingly comfortable. There is a cute mini wood stove if needed. A table with four chairs, a fold down small couch, perfect for kids and a shelf to store things. The views are spectacular and we enjoyed coffee there every morning. There is also a full size bar b q. The solar panels let you charge electronics. We stayed in cabin 4, and our opinion is that this is the best for the view and the closeness to the comfort station. Love it here. There is a very friendly boat launch and we were able to use our boat to further explore this amazing area of beauty.

We had cabin #3, it was clean and cozy, and the aroma of the wood made it more romantic. Bathroom and toilet are outside in a comfort area. The cabin has a propane BBQ.. Us coming from Ontario, the drive from the highway seems like forever from the highway where the big sign was that Google maps led us.. our interest was the table lands so we chose the Lomond camp sites . We drive all the way to Woody point about an hour to book a cabin and it was on top of the hill. And back track half an hour to reach the cabin.

We stayed two nights on one of the waterfront tent sites and it was without a doubt one of the most beautiful places I've ever woken up. The mountains, the water, the wilderness are all right at hand. The beach was rocky and there was quite a bit of seaweed along the shore. We definitely got in for a dip and didn't regret it. Lovely spot for a swim and we saw lots of kayaks and boats going out while we were there. One thing I wasn't expecting was the condensation on the tent in the morning. We had borrowed equipment that wasn't water tight and we woke up a bit damp each morning despite the beautiful days and nights. Most tents (and campers) will tolerate the moisture just fine. We didn't get to hike the Stanleyville trail, but we'd love to come back and do it next time we're in the area. The cabins looked great too. The bathrooms are at the top of the campground from the waterfront tent sites, so prepare for a few bedtime and early morning hill-climbs! Great spot!
