Gulf Islands/Fort Pickens
Overview
The Fort Pickens Campground at Gulf Islands National Seashore offers a unique opportunity to camp within a protected coastal environment. Located on the western tip of Santa Rosa Island, this destination combines natural beauty with deep historical roots. Visitors find themselves surrounded by pristine emerald green waters and sugar-white sands, providing a tranquil escape from more developed coastal resorts. The park is managed by the National Park Service, ensuring a focus on conservation and historical education while maintaining a peaceful atmosphere for all travelers.
Location & Surroundings
The park is situated at the terminus of Fort Pickens Road in Pensacola, Florida. This narrow strip of land is bordered by the Gulf of Mexico to the south and Pensacola Bay to the north. The approach to the campground involves a scenic drive through towering dunes and salt marshes, where the coastal landscape shifts with the tides and seasons. Its isolated position at the end of the island offers a sense of privacy and quiet rarely found on Florida's popular panhandle beaches, making it feel like a true wilderness retreat.
Amenities & Park Features
While the setting is natural, the campground provides essential comforts for modern travelers. Most sites feature water and electric hookups with both 30 and 50-amp service available. The loops accommodate a variety of setups, including large RVs and fifth wheels, though some sites offer more shade than others. Guests have access to central restrooms with hot showers, a convenient dump station, and a camp store for basic supplies. Each site typically includes:
- A sturdy picnic table
- A fire ring for evening gatherings
- Paved or gravel parking pads
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is the historic Fort Pickens, a massive pentagonal fortification completed in 1834. RVers can spend hours exploring its brick tunnels and batteries. For nature lovers, the park serves as the northern terminus of the Florida National Scenic Trail, offering miles of hiking and birding opportunities. Beach access is effortless, with dedicated boardwalks leading to quiet stretches of sand perfect for swimming, shelling, or watching the Blue Angels flight team practice overhead during their training season.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for travelers who prioritize natural scenery and history over luxury resort amenities. It is a perfect fit for families looking to combine an educational trip with a beach vacation and for birdwatchers or photographers captivated by coastal wildlife. If you enjoy a quiet, dark-sky environment and do not mind the absence of on-site sewer hookups at the individual sites, Fort Pickens provides one of the most memorable and immersive camping experiences in the Gulf South.

Fort Pickens is one of my favorite places in Pensacola. It's where I take people when it's their first time here. A great and unique thing about this fort is the ability to self guide yourself around the grounds. Love love this park.

A little history and a bit of relaxation. The perfect combination. It's worth drive to see and explore the old fort and to see the beach with less hustle and bustle. Just the simple beauty of the beach the way it once was. There are bathrooms and a good path to get you closer to the packed sand. The water was super clear and the sunset was lovely. There are tables in the pavilion so you can have sand free sandwiches 😁. There's also a shower to rinse off all the things on the path out. We will definitely be back.

Ft. Pickens was a really interesting place to visit! It is so much bigger in person with a lot to look at. Our boys enjoyed going down the tunnels. If it hadn't been 101 degrees, we would have loved exploring more.

These are only pictures of the main Fort. The highlight of your visit. You need 2 days to see everything here. All of the batteries around the key are fascinating to see and wander around. So much history here. The beaches are also very beautiful. Amazing sense of peace. Well worth the 7 day pass. If you camp here even better. One of our favorite places to visit in Pensacola. And the rangers are super friendly and informative.

You have to pay a entrance fee to get inside. But after you get in you have beautiful beaches and sand dunes up until you reach the fort. There will be a self guided tour, you can walk almost everywhere you want had have amazing sights and tunnels to explore (be aware that mose are dead ends and you'll need to follow your steps back) but nonetheless the historical place is amazing to visit.
