Harrison Bay
Overview
Harrison Bay State Park holds a special place in Tennessee history as the first state park established in the system. Covering approximately 1,200 acres along the eastern shore of Chickamauga Lake, the park offers a deep immersion into the natural beauty of the Tennessee River Valley. RVers will find a classic state park experience defined by towering hardwoods and nearly 40 miles of scenic shoreline. It is a destination that balances historical significance with diverse recreational opportunities in a tranquil, wooded setting.
Location & Surroundings
Located in the town of Harrison, TN, the park is situated just a short drive northeast of Chattanooga. The landscape is dominated by the expansive waters of Chickamauga Lake, which provides a dramatic backdrop for the heavily forested campgrounds. While the park feels secluded and peaceful, its proximity to major highways makes it an accessible retreat for those traveling through the southeastern United States. The surrounding area is characterized by rolling hills and lush vegetation, providing a true sense of Tennessee wilderness.
Amenities & Park Features
The park features 128 RV-friendly campsites equipped with water and electrical hookups, including several sites that accommodate 50-amp service. Facilities include clean bathhouses with hot showers, a dump station, and a laundromat for guest convenience. Beyond the campsites, visitors can enjoy the Bear Trace at Harrison Bay, a Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course that is highly regarded by travelers. Additional features include a large seasonal swimming pool, multiple boat ramps for easy water access, and several miles of hiking and biking trails winding through the forest.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Water-based recreation is the primary draw here, with boating, kayaking, and fishing for bass and catfish topping the list of popular activities. For those looking to explore beyond the park boundaries, the vibrant city of Chattanooga is less than 20 miles away. Travelers can spend a day visiting the Tennessee Aquarium or exploring the heights of Lookout Mountain. The nearby Tennessee Riverwalk provides even more space for cycling and walking, while local marinas offer boat rentals for those who do not bring their own watercraft.
Who This Park Is Best For
Harrison Bay is an ideal destination for families and outdoor enthusiasts who appreciate a traditional camping atmosphere over a high-density commercial resort. It is a haven for anglers and boaters who want direct lake access, as well as golfers looking for a premier course within walking distance of their rig. Because of its quiet evenings and natural canopy, it is also perfect for nature photographers and birdwatchers looking to escape the hustle of the city while remaining close to modern urban attractions.

Prettiest park we’ve been to since moving to Chatt. Will definitely come back and make it a regular outdoor spot for ourselves.

December camping at Harrison Bay State Park was quite enjoyable! Lots of available spaces, as you can imagine 😁 Water, 50 amp service, and good sites all for less than the cost of a fast food meal per day! We took advantage of the 4.3 mile walking loop near the Marina and had an especially good outing with our 2 Siberian Huskies. The bathhouse in the B loop was very nice, clean and well heated. Highly recommended!

Such a beautiful place to camp. Friendly staff at the office and place is pristine. Some spots in the B-loop seem cramped for large camping trailers. Last 2 weeks of October many campers decorate thier sites for Trick-o-Treaters, such a fun tradition.

Very pretty state park with many waterfront or near the water Camping sites. Deer are a common site. Great fishing. Has a large marina. Only downside is alot of the sites in the B camping loop and very undeveloped. We were able to switch sites but beware!

The sites are very close to one another so if you have loud neighbors you will hear everything they say. The park is not set up to accommodate long campers and motorbikes so if you dare you better be skilled. I saw a motorhome take out a fire ring while trying to negotiate a curve. Not enough bathouse if everyone used them instead of their camper.
