Heron Lake
Overview
Heron Lake State Park, situated in the picturesque high country of northern New Mexico, offers a serene escape for RVers seeking a deep connection with nature. Known for its status as a quiet lake, this destination enforces a no-wake policy, making it a premier spot for sailing, rowing, and paddle sports. The park encompasses several distinct campgrounds that cater to different styles of travel, from primitive spots to developed sites. Travelers often visit for the stunning mountain views and the peaceful atmosphere that sets it apart from more motorized-focused reservoirs in the region.
Location & Surroundings
The park is located near the small community of Los Ojos, tucked away in the scenic Rio Arriba County. At an elevation of over 7,000 feet, the climate is significantly cooler than the New Mexico desert floor, characterized by ponderosa pines and gamble oaks. The surrounding terrain is a mix of rugged canyons and rolling hills, providing a dramatic backdrop for sunset photography. Its proximity to the Rio Chama Wildlife Area ensures that visitors are frequently treated to sightings of elk, deer, and diverse bird species like bald eagles.
Amenities & Park Features
While Heron Lake provides a more rustic experience than a commercial resort, it offers essential conveniences for the modern traveler. Several campgrounds, such as Willow Creek, provide electric and water hookups suitable for medium-sized RVs. The park features multiple on-site dump stations and centrally located restroom facilities with showers to keep campers comfortable. For those bringing boats, the ramps are well-maintained, and the hiking trail system, including the scenic bridge over the Rio Chama, is easily accessible from the various camping loops.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Beyond the water, the area is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. The 5.5-mile Rio Chama Trail connects Heron Lake with neighboring El Vado Lake, offering a moderately challenging hike with incredible vistas. Fishing is a major draw, with the lake being regularly stocked with rainbow trout and kokanee salmon. History buffs can take a short drive to visit the historic Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad in nearby Chama or explore the traditional weaving shops in Los Ojos, which preserve the region Spanish colonial heritage.
Who This Park Is Best For
Heron Lake is ideal for RVers who prioritize tranquility and outdoor recreation over luxury amenities or high-speed connectivity. It is a dream destination for sailors, kayakers, and anglers who appreciate the lack of noisy motorboats. Families who enjoy wildlife spotting and stargazing will find the designated dark skies particularly enchanting. If you are looking for a place to disconnect from the digital world and immerse yourself in the rugged beauty of the Southern Rockies, this park offers the perfect environment.

The water is down, but this place was so beautiful and peaceful, we were even followed by a lone wolf.

Beautiful drive but Heron lake is so dry that the campsites around it are closed. The Rio Chama nearby is incredibly low and murky. I came out this way to fly fish and wade the Chama only to find out its barely moving and the lake is down considerably. Gorgeous views in this area, but not very ripe for fishing

The water was very low. Beautiful views, cleans camp sites. Would definitely go again.

Fantastic campground! Camp staff members were so helpful and friendly. Blanco campground spots have tons of space and are spread out nicely. Quiet and clean! We will be back! The photos only show the immediate area. The site was large enough to house our camper, truck, awning, and screen house 3 times.

Beautiful park with awesome RV spots. We brought our 44' 5th wheel for New Years and had an amazing experience. So much wildlife big mule bucks and even saw a few elk. Water lines were frozen but camp host allowed us to use the spot next to us that was empty so it all worked out. We would stay here again 100%
