Hickory Hills Park (Black Hawk County Park)

Overview

Hickory Hills Park, managed by Black Hawk County Conservation, serves as a premier outdoor destination in Northeast Iowa for those seeking a tranquil escape. Spanning over 700 acres of diverse landscape, the park is characterized by its rolling hills and dense timber, providing a stark contrast to the surrounding flat farmlands. At the heart of the park lies the 39-acre Casey Lake, which draws visitors year-round for its scenic beauty and recreational opportunities. Whether you are planning a weekend fishing trip or a quiet week of relaxation, the park offers a well-maintained, nature-focused atmosphere that celebrates the region's natural heritage.

Location & Surroundings

Located just a few miles north of La Porte City, Iowa, Hickory Hills Park is easily accessible via Highway 218. This strategic location makes it a convenient stop for travelers moving through the Cedar River Valley, while its deep woods provide a sense of total seclusion. The park's terrain is uniquely undulating for the region, offering scenic vistas and shaded valleys that stay cool during the warm summer months. Visitors will appreciate the proximity to the Waterloo and Cedar Falls metropolitan area, which is less than a 30-minute drive away, providing the perfect balance between wilderness and urban convenience.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground at Hickory Hills Park caters to modern RVers while maintaining a rustic charm. The park features numerous campsites equipped with electric hookups and easy access to community water hydrants and a convenient dump station. Guests have access to modern restrooms and heated shower facilities, ensuring a comfortable stay. For recreation, the park is home to a variety of unique features, including:

  • A professionally designed disc golf course that winds through the timber.
  • A 39-acre lake with a boat ramp specifically designated for electric motors and non-motorized craft.
  • Extensive hiking and multi-use trails that transform into cross-country skiing paths during the winter.
  • A dedicated archery range and several picnic shelters for large group gatherings.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

While the park itself offers plenty of activity, the surrounding area is rich with cultural and outdoor attractions. Anglers often spend their days on Casey Lake, which is well-stocked with bluegill, catfish, and largemouth bass. For those looking to venture further, the nearby Cedar Valley Nature Trail provides a paved route for long-distance cycling and running that connects several local communities. Families often enjoy a short trip into Waterloo to visit the Grout Museum District or the Lost Island Waterpark, making Hickory Hills an excellent base camp for exploring the wider Black Hawk County region.

Hickory hills park is a quiet campground. There's a nice lake with a beautiful open tree line. There's buffalo and long horn steer nearby to look at as well.

This is a gem of a park, so much so that I'm tempted to rank it low so you don't want to go there. It has rolling hills, a nice lake (except in 2025 they drained it to do some work on it), a bow range, picnic areas, a campground, a disc golf course through the woods, wildflower meadows, hunting areas, AND buffalo and elk to see. It is a hidden gem in northeastern iowa and well worth a trip, even if you just drive through.

Beautifully kept grounds with elk, bison, cabins, extremely clean bathrooms, lots of well designed sites, and a very kind camp host!
