Hideaway Adventure Grounds
Overview
Hideaway Adventure Grounds offers a unique and meaningful connection to the land within the Kikino Metis Settlement. This Indigenous-owned and operated park is far more than a typical overnight stop; it is a dedicated space for healing, learning, and cultural immersion. The park operates with a low-impact philosophy, ensuring that the natural beauty of the Alberta wilderness remains preserved for every guest who visits.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in the heart of the Lakeland region, the grounds are nestled within 160 acres of lush boreal forest. Located about 40 minutes south of Lac La Biche, the park provides a secluded atmosphere where the sounds of the city are replaced by rustling aspen leaves. The surrounding Kikino Metis Settlement offers a rare opportunity for travelers to experience the history and hospitality of the Metis people in a stunning natural setting.
Amenities & Park Features
This park is a rustic, off-grid destination, making it an excellent choice for those who enjoy dry camping or boondocking. While there are no power or water hookups, the park provides exceptionally large and private sites that can accommodate most RV sizes. Guests benefit from essential amenities including clean outhouses, fire pits, and complimentary firewood. The heart of the park is its communal area, where traditional Metis teachings and bushcraft workshops often take place.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to do with Whitefish Lake located nearby, offering excellent opportunities for fishing, kayaking, and boating. For those looking for a traditional beach experience, Kikino Silverwood Resort is just a short drive away. On-site, guests are encouraged to participate in guided wilderness tours, where they can learn about local flora, fauna, and traditional survival skills passed down through generations.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for self-sufficient travelers and RVers who prioritize peace and quiet over modern resort amenities. If you are looking for a cultural educational experience and a chance to disconnect from digital distractions, this park fits your travel style perfectly. It is best suited for those who appreciate a wilderness-first approach and want to support Indigenous tourism while exploring the beauty of Northern Alberta.

John is an excellent host and this is a perfect spot to immerse yourself in nature. Great for learning about Metis culture or exploring the many nearby lakes. I highly recommend visiting and look forward to future trips.

A Truly Sacred Space for Connection and Growth Working alongside John Ritchie and the team at Hideaway Adventure Grounds has been nothing short of extraordinary. From the moment you step onto the land, you can feel the deep respect and care that has gone into creating a space rooted in culture, healing, and community. John is a visionary — a true leader who walks gently but powerfully. His commitment to honoring Indigenous ways while welcoming people from all walks of life is both inspiring and essential. Whether you're here for ceremony, education, or simply to reconnect with the land, Hideaway provides the kind of experience that stays with you long after you leave. I’m proud to call John a friend, partner, and brother in this work. The land is lucky to have him — and so are all of us who get to learn, heal, and grow at Hideaway. – Russ McRae Founder, AAROE Survival and Wilderness Travel Adventures

Attended the "Exploring the Land" weekend workshop and opted to add a canvas wall tent on to the experience rather than sleep in the shelter we made. The workshop was wonderful. We learned a lot about bushcrafting. The tent was clean. The heater worked well. It was a very welcoming and peaceful environment. I can't wait to go back and check out the micro cabins this summer.

John is amazing and what he's created is truly unique! He's patient and articulate in explaining his culture with everyone. You truly get a chance to learn and expand your horizons. Kids find is sooo cool to cook over an open fire and experience our authentic Alberta. Come stay at Hideaway - you will have the most amazing time!

John has developed a first class experience in land based harmony. I have taken my middle school students there for land based instruction. I have taken school staff there for land based connections. We are greeted by John and his dog Buddy and once you get there…you feel like you have come home. I highly recommend Hideaway Adventure Grounds for individual or group experiences!
