Hog Island Point

Overview

Hog Island Point State Forest Campground offers a serene escape for travelers seeking an authentic Upper Peninsula experience. Situated directly on the shores of Lake Michigan, this rustic campground provides a peaceful alternative to busy commercial resorts. It is widely celebrated for its stunning waterfront views and the gentle, rhythmic sound of the waves that lulls campers to sleep each night. The area is also known for its dark skies, making it a spectacular location for stargazing away from city lights.

Location & Surroundings

Located just seven miles east of Naubinway along the scenic US-2 corridor, the park is nestled within a lush canopy of cedar, birch, and pine trees. This prime location allows visitors to immerse themselves in the rugged beauty of the northern Michigan shoreline. The surrounding landscape features vast stretches of undisturbed beach and tranquil forest paths that highlight the diverse ecology of Mackinac County. It serves as a perfect midway point for those traveling between the Mackinac Bridge and the western reaches of the peninsula.

Amenities & Park Features

As a primitive state forest site, the focus here is on simplicity and a true connection to nature. The campground provides basic facilities to ensure a comfortable but rustic stay:

  • Vault toilets located conveniently near the campsites
  • A hand pump providing potable water for guests
  • Direct access to a stunning sandy beach
The sites are mostly shaded and well-spaced, offering a sense of seclusion. While there are no electric or sewer hookups, the natural beach access makes it a fantastic spot for swimming, sunbathing, or launching small watercraft like kayaks into the crystal-clear lake water.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find a wealth of exploration opportunities within a short drive of the park. The nearby Cut River Bridge and its surrounding roadside park offer breathtaking views and rugged hiking trails through a deep limestone gorge. Visitors can also explore these local highlights:

  • The unique Garlyn Zoo located just down the road
  • The Top of the Lake Snowmobile Museum in Naubinway
  • Local fishing spots along the Epoufette Bay
Whether you are interested in local history or wildlife viewing, the region provides a quiet, slow-paced atmosphere for discovery.

Great place to camp right on Lake Michigan!! A little road noise, but not bad. Sites are spaced well and pretty private. Dog friendly, vault toilets and water. Beautiful sunsets!!

Very beautiful first stay and we will be coming back. I made a shirt and got a perfect beautiful view of lake Michigan in the background. Many heart's rather water did it, or earth w rocks. I loved our camp site spot. Thank you for this beautiful lakeside camping spot. First come first serve. I recommend looking first thing in the morning. Then at 1pm when people check out if you don't see a site available in the morning. Tags will say when they are leaving so you can get
