Overview

Honey Creek Resort serves as a premier destination for those seeking a balance between nature and comfort on the shores of Rathbun Lake. Located in Moravia, Iowa, this expansive resort offers a unique alternative to typical campgrounds by integrating high-end lodge facilities with a dedicated RV park. It is designed to provide a comprehensive vacation experience where the scenic beauty of southern Iowa meets modern recreational convenience and professional hospitality.

Location & Surroundings

Nestled within the rolling landscapes of Appanoose County, the resort is defined by its proximity to the water. The surrounding area consists of over 11,000 acres of water and lush forests, providing a haven for birdwatching and photography. The park’s location on a peninsula ensures that guests are never far from a lake view, creating a tranquil environment that feels secluded while remaining easily accessible from major Iowa highways and the nearby Honey Creek State Park.

Amenities & Park Features

The RV park provides 28 full-hookup sites equipped with 50-amp service, water, and sewer connections. Each site features a level, paved pad and a private fire ring for evening gatherings. Beyond the campsite, guests enjoy access to the resort’s signature amenities:

  • The Buccaneer Bay Indoor Water Park, featuring slides and a lazy river.
  • An 18-hole championship golf course known as The Preserve.
  • A full-service marina with boat rentals and a boat ramp.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is Rathbun Lake, Iowa’s second-largest lake, perfect for sailing, fishing, and jet skiing. Visitors can explore miles of multi-use trails that are ideal for both hiking and biking. For a change of pace, the local area provides additional wilderness trails and historical interpretive sites. The nearby town of Centerville offers a historic downtown district with beautiful architecture and local boutiques for those interested in a day trip to explore regional Iowa culture.

Who This Park Is Best For

THE RESORT IS CLOSED!! we drove almost 4 hours for our reservation and found out when we pulled up to the entrance that the resort was closed. It would’ve been nice if they would’ve contacted me to let me know. I am thankful I got my money back.

Zero stars if we were allowed. Failed to let us know prior to booking/arrival that the waterpark was closed. They claim it was an automatic email but we got nothing other than the regular confirmation. The receptionist over the phone told us we could come before check in to get wristbands and swim until the room was ready. The waterpark was our reason for booking here, we would have gone somewhere else especially for the price. Rooms are run down definitely not worth the price. They need to add it to their website or call expected guests if they aren’t going to have one of the main amenities open.

We had an absolutely wonderful stay at this cabin! The location right on the lake was breathtaking, and the cabin itself was cozy, clean, and well-equipped with everything we needed. Waking up to the sunrise over the water and enjoying coffee on the deck was pure bliss. The hosts were friendly, helpful, and attentive without being intrusive. The cabin had a perfect mix of comfort and charm, with plenty of space for relaxing and enjoying the outdoors. Whether you want to fish, swim, or just unwind, this is the perfect spot. We left feeling completely refreshed and can’t wait to come back!

Will not be coming back! We camped at the RV park, due to it being one of the few places with full hookups around the lake. RV sites were nice with a view of the lake, but the fee is $59 per night, PLUS a $25 per night "Resort Fee." That makes the camping fee $84 per night! No way is this a destination RV park resort, similar to some KOAs or Glacier National Park where we spent that much for an RV site. The water park was closed, and we used NO other amenities at the resort. We did spend over $100 in the Prairie Rose restaurant at the resort, with marginal food and service. I have been told the Resort Fee is mandatory for all guests for maintenance and upkeep of the resort. So, why not just includes it in the upfront fees, instead of burying this charge in the Resort Policies?? Needless to say, we will NOT being staying here again! We found that Honey Creek State Park, just a few miles down the road, has some full hookup sites for only $30 per night, so that will be our destination from now on when we often visit our family in Centerville. It's no wonder Honey Creek Resort can't make it!

This resort was a GREAT place for us, our 4 kids and seven small granddaughters. The full suite was PERFECT for a gathering place for all of us for meal times. The kids loved the beach, water park, paddle boats and train ride. The park with a shelter was close enough to enjoy a couple of times, too. The staff was super friendly and patient with all of our kiddos. I highly recommend this place!
