Housatonic Meadows
Overview
Housatonic Meadows State Park offers a peaceful retreat located within the rugged hills of northwestern Connecticut. This state-managed park provides a quintessential New England camping experience under a thick canopy of **towering pines** along the banks of the Housatonic River. The park serves as a gateway to the Appalachian Trail and is renowned for its scenic riverfront sites that offer a front-row seat to the local wildlife and seasonal foliage changes. It is a destination that favors natural beauty over modern frills, inviting travelers to slow down and immerse themselves in the quiet rhythms of the forest and the flowing water.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in Cornwall Bridge, the park is nestled in the heart of the **Housatonic Valley**. The surrounding landscape is characterized by the rolling Berkshire Hills and the winding river, which is the central feature of the park's identity. RVers will find themselves surrounded by dense woodlands and rocky outcrops, creating a sense of isolation that feels much farther from civilization than it actually is. The proximity to Route 7 makes the park easily accessible for travelers, yet the depth of the trees provides a significant buffer of solitude and peace from the outside world.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional state park, the facilities here are simple and best suited for those comfortable with **dry camping**. There are no electric or water hookups at the individual sites, though the park provides several essential services for self-contained travelers:
- Access to **clean drinking water** located at central points throughout the grounds.
- A convenient **sanitary dump station** for RV waste management.
- Individual sites featuring flat pads, **sturdy picnic tables**, and fire rings for evening gatherings.
The lack of modern distractions like Wi-Fi ensures a genuine off-the-grid feel, allowing visitors to fully appreciate the natural environment and the starlit night skies.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
This area is a premier destination for **fly fishing**, particularly within the designated catch-and-release section of the river that borders the campground. For those who prefer land-based activities, a stretch of the **Appalachian Trail** passes nearby, providing world-class hiking opportunities for all skill levels. Just a short drive away, visitors can explore the iconic West Cornwall Covered Bridge or witness the cascading tiers of Kent Falls State Park. The nearby town of Cornwall Bridge offers charming local shops and essential supplies for those planning a longer stay in the woods.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal match for travelers who prioritize a **primitive camping experience** and direct access to outdoor recreation. Due to the lack of hookups and some tighter navigation within the wooded sites, it is best for owners of **smaller RVs, camper vans, or teardrop trailers**. It is a perfect choice for nature photographers, dedicated anglers, and anyone looking to swap digital distractions for the meditative sounds of the river. It remains a sanctuary for those who value tranquility and a deep connection to nature over the amenities of a luxury resort.

Look, it's a beautiful spot, your normal state park, not their fault, but they need more manpower to enforce the rules. I called the desk to report people fishing with a net and a fly fishing only, and nobody showed up.

Everything about this park for camping is excellent. Very lively when all the grounds are occupied. We spent 2 days and we loved the park. Park also has fire wood , parking staff are very cooperative. Restrooms need little more maintenance. I was told ladies restrooms are not clean. If the camp grounds are vacant be very careful as the bear activity will be more. Enjoy camping

Great camping experience. The small loop is quiet during the week. The larger loops, not so much.

Awesome! It is one of the most beautiful and amazing campsites that gives you access to the great river! You'll have plenty of choices to enjoy in the water/river! (Tubeing, fishing, ...) very clean and organized restroom services! Less than 10 minutes (drive) to Kent Waterfall state park! DEFINITELY RECOMMENDED!!!

Direct view of the Housatonic River on the left. Good for Fall views too. Picnic benches on the right and cars can be parked on the lawn right next to them. No grills or restrooms.
