Huron-Manistee/Monument

Overview

Monument Campground offers a peaceful retreat within the sprawling Huron-Manistee National Forests. Situated near the historic Lumberman’s Monument, this site provides a traditional camping experience focused on the natural beauty of Northeast Michigan. Visitors often choose this location to escape the noise of more developed resorts and enjoy the rustling of mature pines and hardwoods. It serves as an excellent base for exploring the rich history and diverse ecosystems found along the scenic Au Sable River corridor.

Location & Surroundings

The park is located approximately 15 miles west of Tawas City, positioned on the high banks overlooking the river valley. The surrounding landscape is characterized by dense forest cover and dramatic elevation changes that offer stunning vistas. This specific area of the national forest is renowned for its high banks and river bluffs, providing a unique geological backdrop for outdoor enthusiasts. The elevation ensures a sense of seclusion, even during the busier summer months.

Amenities & Park Features

As a rustic destination, the amenities here prioritize a primitive connection with nature. The park features include:

  • Spacious, shaded campsites equipped with heavy-duty fire rings and picnic tables.
  • Access to communal vault toilets and hand-pumped drinking water.
  • Direct access to the Highbanks River Trail system for immediate hiking.

While there are no electrical or water hookups at individual sites, the layout accommodates various RV sizes, though travelers should be prepared for a self-contained experience without modern utilities.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

A highlight of staying here is the immediate proximity to the Lumberman’s Monument visitor center, where travelers can learn about the region's 19th-century logging history. Outdoor recreation is abundant, with the Highbanks River Trail offering miles of hiking with panoramic views of the water. For a different perspective, the Au Sable River Queen paddle-wheel boat offers tours nearby, while the river itself is a prime destination for trout fishing and leisurely canoeing.

Beautiful trails. Just wish they were marked better. Some how the trail we were in ran into a road. Not sure if that was the end or not.
