Huron-Manistee/Pines Point

Overview

Pines Point Campground, nestled within the expansive Huron-Manistee National Forests, offers a serene escape for those who appreciate the natural beauty of Michigan’s lower peninsula. This destination is defined by its scenic riverside setting and its location under a dense canopy of towering pines. It serves as a gateway to the White River, providing a quiet atmosphere that prioritizes the sounds of the forest over modern noise. It is a traditional forest service site that emphasizes a primitive camping experience for those looking to disconnect and recharge in a tranquil woodland environment.

Location & Surroundings

Located just a short drive from Hesperia, MI, the park is situated along the winding banks of the White River. The surrounding landscape is characterized by rolling hills and deep woods, making it a prime spot for wildlife viewing and nature photography. Because it is part of a federally protected national forest, visitors are surrounded by thousands of acres of public land, ensuring that the environment remains pristine and largely untouched by urban development or commercial sprawl.

Amenities & Park Features

As a rustic national forest campground, the amenities at Pines Point are simple but functional. The park provides vault toilets and hand-pumped water, catering primarily to self-contained RVers and traditional tent campers. Each site typically includes a sturdy picnic table and a heavy-duty fire ring for evening gatherings. While there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups, the sites are spacious and well-shaded. The primary feature of the park is the direct river access, which includes a popular landing area for those launching or retrieving watercraft.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The White River is the centerpiece of activity here, famous for tubing, kayaking, and canoeing through gentle currents that are perfect for a relaxing afternoon. Anglers often visit the area to fish for trout or salmon, depending on the season. For those who prefer land-based adventures, the proximity to various forest trail systems offers ample opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, and mountain biking. The nearby town of Hesperia provides convenient access to local shops for supplies, while the larger forest area provides endless exploration for the curious traveler.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for travelers who enjoy dry camping and boondocking in a peaceful, natural environment. It is perfect for families looking to spend a summer day drifting down the river or for couples seeking a quiet retreat under the stars. Because the sites are somewhat rugged and lack modern hookups, it is best suited for adventure-seekers and outdoor enthusiasts who are happy to trade luxury amenities for direct access to Michigan’s stunning wilderness and refreshing water trails.

Been going to pines point campgrounds for close to 20 years and this year the grounds keeper was rude and thought yelling was the right way to talk to the campers, the bathroom were not cleaned daily, hopefully next year there will be someone different with a better attitude. $30. dollars a night for a rustic camp sites is starting to becoming a little expensive

Got turned around around realizing this was a fee area. Quickly in 2 minutes used the pit toilet located at the visitors area when my girlfriend and I were met by a man named ed in his 70-80s on a golf cart threatening to write us a 140$ ticket and cussing us out for not paying the 10$ fee. After we explained we saw the fee and wanted to find a new area to fish that was free he continued to threaten us and said if we didn't leave now he would give us the ticket. He called my girlfriend, dude, man, and sir. The entire interaction and was screaming, we were there a total of maybe 3 minutes.

Campground is really nice, but the camp hosts have taken over their spot and it looks like a disaster. They also were poori g oil on their fire, violating all the Campground rules. Didn't feel they were a very good representation for a National Park Campground. They would have been better suited at a State Campground. It was a packed weekend at the campground, but everyone leaves on Sunday. We had the place to ourselves for a few days.

It's a really nice spot in the woods. Clean, beautiful, and peaceful. Floating and swimming in the river is amazing I'm definitely coming back.
