Idaho Panhandle/Bell Bay

Overview

Bell Bay Campground, managed by the Idaho Panhandle National Forests, offers a quintessential Pacific Northwest experience on the eastern shores of Lake Coeur d'Alene. This is not a manicured resort but a secluded forest retreat that prioritizes natural beauty and quietude. Visitors are treated to a landscape dominated by towering cedars and Douglas firs, providing a shaded sanctuary just steps away from the water. It serves as an ideal basecamp for those looking to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with the rugged charm of Northern Idaho.

Location & Surroundings

Located near the charming town of Harrison, Idaho, the park sits on a steep hillside overlooking the crystal-clear waters of Bell Bay. The surrounding terrain is heavily timbered, creating a sense of privacy between sites. Travelers should be prepared for winding, narrow access roads that lead into the heart of the Idaho Panhandle. The proximity to the lake allows for stunning sunset views and easy access to the shoreline, where the air is scented with pine and the sounds of the forest prevail over highway noise.

Amenities & Park Features

As a Forest Service site, the amenities at Bell Bay are intentionally primitive and rustic. There are no water, sewer, or electric hookups available for RVs. The campground is divided into two sections: an upper loop more suitable for small trailers and a lower loop better for tents. Facilities include vault toilets and potable water provided via hand pumps. Each site is equipped with a heavy-duty picnic table and a fire ring, catering to the traditional dry camping experience that many outdoor enthusiasts crave.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water-based recreation is the primary draw, with a dedicated boat dock available for campers to enjoy fishing and motorized boating on Lake Coeur d'Alene. For those who prefer land, the Bell Bay Trail offers a scenic loop through the forest with glimpses of the water. Just a short drive away, the town of Harrison provides access to the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes, a famous 73-mile paved path perfect for cycling. Local marinas and small-town eateries offer a convenient break from campfire cooking.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is best suited for self-contained RVers and tent campers who value scenery over modern conveniences. Because of the narrow roads and sloped sites, it is ideal for those with smaller campers, van lifers, or truck campers rather than large motorhomes. If you are looking for a tranquil escape to fish, hike, and enjoy a crackling fire under a dark starlit sky, Bell Bay provides the perfect backdrop for your next outdoor adventure in the Idaho Panhandle.

Great views, the only draw back is the water access is a bit longer path.

Beautiful scenic views, best spots 10 and 8. No showers and basic facilities, campground host was very nice.

This quaint campground is a classic Forest Service campground. It has the rarity of having much nicer tent sites than RV sites in my opinion. The tent sites have direct views of the lake in a meadowy forest. This would be a great site for boaters with two sturdy docks that can accommodate several boats. We have paddle boards and kayaks and were quite disappointed by the steep trek to the water and back UP! We ended up not paddling from this location as much as we normally do. Jan does a great job of managing and maintaining the facility. I highly recommend this campground for its sites and for boaters, but not for paddlers.

Bell Bay campground was fine but not great for a visit. Banks are really steep for getting down to the lake, there is a trail to the docks, a little far to carry the kayak. No beach, could use some trail upkeep, but the restrooms were clean, camping area was clean, nice friendly host. And the view is great. We will probably find another campground with better water access next time.

Camp host (Jan) was excellent. Huge help with finding a spot. Great spot.. Bit of a drive, but no reflection on the site. Camp host (Bobby) at Beauty Creek was huge help with getting us over to this site, because his place was all booked up..
