Illinois Beach
Overview
Adeline Jay Geo-Karis Illinois Beach State Park offers a unique coastal camping experience along the scenic shores of Lake Michigan. Located in Zion, this park preserves the final remaining beach ridge shoreline in the state. It serves as a peaceful retreat for RVers who value natural beauty and direct access to the water. The park spans over 4,000 acres, offering a mix of dunes, marshes, and expansive sandy beaches that provide a refreshing contrast to the nearby urban sprawl.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in northern Illinois, the park is nestled between the communities of Zion and Winthrop Harbor. The setting is defined by its diverse ecosystems, including swales and prairie lands that support a wide variety of local wildlife. Travelers will find themselves surrounded by the calming sounds of the lake while remaining conveniently close to the metropolitan areas of Chicago and Milwaukee. The lush vegetation and lakefront views create a serene, secluded atmosphere that feels worlds away from the busy highway.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground features over 200 sites that accommodate RVs, though it is important to note that these provide electric-only hookups. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and fire ring for evening gatherings under the stars. On-site facilities include seasonal shower buildings and a conveniently located dump station for waste management. While the sites offer a more rustic feel compared to luxury resorts, the proximity to the water and the well-maintained pads make it a comfortable base for travelers.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy over six miles of shoreline for beachcombing, fishing, or swimming. The park is home to the Zion Bike Trail, which connects to larger regional trail systems for those looking to explore on two wheels. For a change of pace, the nearby North Point Marina offers boating opportunities, while families can find entertainment at Six Flags Great America or the extensive shopping options at Gurnee Mills, all located within a short driving distance.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for RVers who prioritize outdoor recreation and scenic landscapes over high-end commercial resort amenities. It is a fantastic choice for families looking for a classic beach vacation without leaving the Midwest. Bird watchers and photographers will particularly appreciate the rare flora and fauna found within the protected dunes. If you enjoy falling asleep to the sound of crashing waves and waking up to stunning lake sunrises, this park is a perfect fit for your travel style.

Such a beautiful beach. Reminds me of my time in Florida spent along the rock jetties. My young daughter loves to play with the rocks and sand. On a hot summer day the cold water feels so refreshing.

The particular day I went (late Sept) was sumy because I was in the area for something else. There was almost no one on the beach. It was a beautiful day, so I paced the shore for a bit before laying out a blanket to read and listen to the waves rolling in. I couldn't stay long but it looked like a beautiful park and would definitely go back 😊

A Pleasant, Spotless Day by the Lake Michigan Shore I recently spent a wonderful afternoon at Adeline Jay Geo-Karis Illinois Beach State Park and was genuinely impressed. The environment felt incredibly peaceful and well cared for—everything was clean from the beach to the surrounding trails. What stood out most was how pleasant the experience was. The shoreline was inviting and perfect for unwinding, while the well-maintained amenities added to the enjoyment. Whether you’re camping, strolling along the dunes, or simply relaxing with a scenic view, this park delivers without fuss. Great for a solo escape or a quiet outing with loved ones—definitely worth a visit if you’re near Zion.

Favorite beach out of all of the other ones. It's completely free and well kept / clean, but there's no life guards. The beach is very sandy and has a lot of space where you can walk or swim. There are some seagulls, so be careful around your food. There's not a lot of them though and they're easily avoidable by moving a few feet

For city folks who miss the ocean, this beach delivers. Sand was soft and pebbles were smooth near the shore. Free admission, bathrooms available. No showers or running water. Bring your own water or a bag to fill and wash feet at car. Camp/Beach store is only open Thursday - Sunday.
