Indian Cave

Overview

Indian Cave State Park offers a unique blend of natural beauty and deep history on the banks of the Missouri River. Known for its namesake sandstone cave and prehistoric petroglyphs, this destination provides a peaceful retreat for RVers looking to immerse themselves in Nebraska's most rugged landscape. The park is especially famous for its stunning fall foliage and expansive trail system, making it a premier choice for outdoor enthusiasts seeking a genuine connection with nature.

Location & Surroundings

Tucked away in the southeastern corner of the state near Shubert, the park is defined by the rolling Missouri River bluffs. This specific geography creates a landscape of steep hills and lush hardwood forests that feel worlds away from the flat plains often associated with the Midwest. The secluded location ensures a quiet atmosphere where the sounds of the river and local wildlife dominate, providing a perfect backdrop for scenic overlooks and birdwatching throughout the year.

Amenities & Park Features

The park provides well-maintained facilities for RV travelers, featuring over 130 campsites. Highlights of the park facilities include:

  • Campsites equipped with 30 and 50-amp electrical hookups.
  • Access to modern shower houses and clean restrooms.
  • Conveniently located dump stations for self-contained rigs.

Each site is designed to integrate with the natural woodland, typically including a sturdy picnic table and a heavy-duty fire ring for evening gatherings under the stars.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw at Indian Cave, with over 22 miles of multi-use trails winding through the timbered hills. Visitors should take the scenic boardwalk leading to the cave to view the ancient carvings and geological formations. The Missouri River provides a massive playground for boating and fishing, while the park's living history demonstrations and popular Hallowfest events in October provide unique entertainment that draws visitors from across the region.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal match for active RVers and hikers who prefer the quiet beauty of a state park over the amenities of a commercial resort. It is a fantastic choice for families seeking an educational outdoor experience and photographers looking to capture the Missouri River's dramatic valley. If you enjoy a tranquil, woodland setting with ample space to explore and a slower pace of life, Indian Cave is a top-tier Nebraska destination.

Nice place for the site seeing and enjoy a mild fall scene , good parking and also a Halloween drive through with equally scary portraits.

What an unexpected gem! Took the camper for the weekend. Exceptionally clean and well -maintained park with some unique surprises. We found two cool historic graveyards, one accessible through a vigorous 1 mile trail. There was an amazing cave with prehistoric petroglyphs. There was an old town with demonstrations of broom-making and soap making. There was even a lovely winery in nearby Brownville. Will definitely be back.

The drive out isn't so much fun. But it is most definitely worth the hour and a half drive. We took all 3 children with us and they had a blast! As soon as we got in the car to leave, they all asked when we could come back to this park. We visit A LOT of parks in nebraska and this one is certainly a favorite now!! There's playgrounds throughout the park to keep them entertained. We played Frisbee and baseball while we were there also! 2 of the 3 kids LOVED the "overlook". My wife and stepdaughter apparently have a fear of heights! Lol. There was just so much to do and check out there, it was awesome and we will most definitely be going back!!

Very nice state park with lots of available camping. Middle of the summer and it was maybe 1/4 full. Lots of winding roads and trees. If you are into hiking it has many trails. Keep in mind that it is all hills. For recreational biking the hills are too much--need a vehicle to see all the sights. Don't go just to see the Indian Cave. You can't get very close to it and it's been carved over .

I hiked on trails 8,3,2, and 8A. Did 7.4 miles 3 hrs 2 mins. I went up to half breed cemetery, and the scenic looked out. I didn't see another person on the trails. 8A trail runs along the river. They have been working on some trails because of the rains. The trails are pretty good overall. Today may 8, and I hiked trail 3 and 3a. Some reason my alltrail app wasn't working right. I think I did around 8 miles. There is a lot of up and down on these trails. Very good workout. Was here again today. The Paw Paw trees looked good. Some had fruit on them.
