Indian Lake (West Shore)

Overview

Indian Lake State Park - West Shore Unit offers a serene escape in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, providing a more secluded alternative to the busier South Shore unit. This park is defined by its peaceful atmosphere and lush forest canopy, making it a favorite for travelers who want to experience the quiet side of the Northwoods. It serves as a rugged yet accessible basecamp for exploring the vast natural beauty of Schoolcraft County.

Location & Surroundings

Situated on the western edge of the expansive 8,000-acre Indian Lake, this park is nestled within the Hiawatha National Forest. The surrounding landscape is dominated by dense hardwoods and cedars, creating a natural buffer between campsites. The lake itself is one of the largest in the U.P., offering a shallow, sandy-bottomed basin that creates a unique microclimate and stunning lakeside vistas for evening sunsets.

Amenities & Park Features

The West Shore unit is favored for its generous campsite spacing and rustic charm. While the park provides 20 and 30-amp electric service at most sites, the facilities remain intentionally simple, featuring vault toilets and hand-pumped water stations. RVers can utilize the onsite boat launch, which provides immediate access to the water for fishing, kayaking, or canoeing in the calm, protected waters of the west shore.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The park’s primary draw is its proximity to Palms Book State Park, home to Kitch-iti-kipi, Michigan's largest freshwater spring. Guests can also take a short drive to the Manistique Boardwalk or visit the Seul Choix Point Lighthouse for a taste of maritime history. The lake is a popular destination for anglers seeking walleye, northern pike, and yellow perch in a scenic setting.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for nature enthusiasts who prefer a slower pace and a more traditional camping experience. It is a fantastic choice for those traveling in smaller to mid-sized RVs or camper vans who value privacy and a quiet environment over modern resort features. If you enjoy falling asleep to the sound of wind through the pines, this is the park for you.

It was pretty sparsely populated on the west side. There are two separate roads. Staff were friendly and helpful. It rained Saturday - we went day drinking, Mackinaw Trail Winery, Flatiron Brewery, Tap 21. We have visited this area for 4 years.

Excellent campground and park! Tons of things to do, great plots, kind people and staff, clean bathrooms and showers, water at will and ice and firewood for sale. Check it out for sure!

Nice park with great staff. Lakefront views at night are amazing. Restrooms and showers are in good shape. Canoes are available for use. I visited in mid-June, and there were lots of bugs, so bring the spray.

This is a very nice lakefront campground. Clean and well maintained. Views of the lake can be completely eliminated by campers who park parallel to the roadway, rather than backing in normally. We initially has very good views of the water, however 4 lakefront campsites combined this way for a reunion type event and created a solid wall of trailers that totally blocked any view of the water. To be fair, the sites are quite wide, and perhaps this is permissible, but be advised. Site 31 was extremely unlevel grass pull through which sloped uphill. My six point auto level system could not adjust to the slope, and I had to relocate to the front of the site. Even there, it stretched the limits of my system. Those without a large number of leveling blocks could be out of luck. We camped at Indian Lake State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Nice campground! Reasonable rates. Accommodates all size rigs. Many lakeside sites. Most sites include electric. Water and dump station onsite. Clean bathrooms and showers.
