Inyo/Big Bend

Overview

Tucked away in the eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada, Big Bend Campground offers a quintessential mountain escape within the Inyo National Forest. Situated along the rushing waters of Lee Vining Creek, this park provides a serene, primitive environment for travelers looking to disconnect from the digital world. Unlike modern resorts, this location emphasizes the natural landscape, featuring high-altitude scenery and cool, crisp air that makes it a popular summer retreat. Visitors are greeted by towering granite peaks and a canopy of Jeffrey pines and aspens, creating a peaceful backdrop for your RV journey.

Location & Surroundings

Located just west of the town of Lee Vining, CA, the park sits along Highway 120, also known as the Tioga Pass Road. This strategic location serves as the eastern gateway to Yosemite National Park, making it a prime base camp for alpine exploration. The surroundings are characterized by the dramatic transition from the high desert of the Mono Basin to the rugged peaks of the Sierra. Travelers will appreciate the dramatic canyon views and the immediate access to trout-filled waters, providing a sense of seclusion while remaining close to essential services in town.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional Forest Service site, the amenities here focus on the essentials for self-contained RVers. The park offers vault toilets and potable water via spigots, though there are no hookups or dump stations on-site. Each campsite is equipped with a heavy-duty bear locker, which is mandatory for food storage in this active wildlife corridor. RVers should note that most sites are back-in and vary in size, so checking dimensions is vital for those with mid-sized trailers. The lack of Wi-Fi and cell service ensures a truly immersive off-grid experience amidst the pines.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Adventure is never far away when staying at this Lee Vining gem. A short drive east leads to the prehistoric-looking Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve, famous for its unique limestone towers and migratory bird populations. To the west, the entrance to Yosemite National Park beckons with high-country hiking and glacial lakes. History buffs can take a day trip to Bodie State Historic Park, one of the best-preserved ghost towns in the American West. For those who prefer to stay local, fishing in Lee Vining Creek is a beloved daily ritual for many campers.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for nature enthusiasts and self-sufficient travelers who prioritize scenery over luxury amenities. If you enjoy falling asleep to the sound of a mountain stream and waking up to the smell of pine needles, you will feel right at home. It is best suited for smaller RVs and camper vans that can navigate the forest roads and site footprints more easily. Travelers looking to avoid the crowds of Yosemite Valley while maintaining quick access to the park's high-country highlights will find this rustic setting to be a perfect fit.

What an amazing campsite, this was my first time doing a first come first serve campground and I was pretty nervous about getting a site because all of the other reservation based campgrounds in the area were booked up for the weekend. We arrived on a Thursday at the end of August and got site 8 which had a view of the river. My only suggestion would be to not pick a site that is super close to the bathroom just because it was a little bit stinky when the wind changed directions💩 they have vault toilets that were surprisingly less stinky inside than out. It’s $30 a night but you really can’t beat having the river so close by

My all time favorite place to camp. You can't beat camping under the stars, and listening to the creek as you fall asleep.
