Stayed at a nearby campground. The trout were shy, but the sights were spectacular. Worth a trip

* Fishers please read* This lake is absolutely gorgeous and the campground is wonderful and clean. However, the amount of fishing trash *everywhere* made me sick to my stomach. I came with my toddler, and was never able to let her touch the water. Every time we went anywhere near the lake I found multiple fishing hooks and fishing line everywhere. The line was wrapped around tree branches, floating in the water, strewn all over the beach. This nearly invisible and unbreakable line is death, d.e.a.t.h. for wildlife. I know, I worked for animal control for over a decade. When bird fly into fishing line stuck in trees, or get some caught around their foot they are quickly strangled or have their limb amputated (eventually by loss of circulation). This area is so pristine and unbelievable beautiful and I really feel angry thinking about how much dangerous trash those fishing are leaving behind. If you are coming to this lake to fish PLEASE do not leave an inch of fishing line behind, pick up any trash/line you see, and keep this place healthy for the generations to come.

What's great about this place is that they have a lot of very nice first come first serve spots. You'd probably stay here if you're doing the hike to Gem lake.Theres an extra bonus -the North fork of the river runs through here and there's a gorgeous trail that's quite long and shady all along the river. The camp host is very helpful. Good place to stay if you want to walk the trail it's just a few minutes away by car and the road is very doable.

There are some really fantastic and somewhat secluded Walk in sites at this campground. (There are also some weird spots that are right on the parking area, so choose wisely- if this is your thing, then great). The campground hosts Jean and Luis are absolutely the best! So friendly and they keep the grounds and bathrooms in tip top shape. Bring bug spray. Also there’s a small store at the rock Creek resort nearby, that you can purchase camping basics like bug spray, and delicious cobbler! And please remember, never leave your campfire unattended, DROWN your campfire when you leave!! They even provide buckets at each campsite for you to do so. This place is beautiful and special.
