Inyo/Rock Creek Lake
Overview
Rock Creek Lake offers a quintessential high-altitude camping experience within the stunning Inyo National Forest. Situated at nearly 10,000 feet, this destination provides a cool refuge during the summer months. RVers come here to trade digital connectivity for scenic alpine views and the sounds of whispering pines. It is a place where the pace of life slows down to match the ripples on the glacial water.
Location & Surroundings
Located at the end of Rock Creek Canyon between Bishop and Mammoth Lakes, the park is surrounded by jagged granite peaks. The drive up from Highway 395 reveals the dramatic landscape of the Eastern Sierra mountains. Because of its 9,600-foot elevation, travelers should prepare for thin air and variable weather, even in mid-summer. The surrounding terrain is a playground of sub-alpine meadows and crystalline streams.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a rustic facility with no hookups, meaning RVers must be prepared for a boondocking-style stay. Each site includes the following features:
- Bear-resistant lockers for food storage
- Fire rings and picnic tables
- Access to vault toilets and potable water
While it lacks the luxury of a modern resort, the proximity to the water and the well-maintained sites create an authentic outdoor atmosphere. Travelers should ensure their batteries are charged and water tanks are full before arrival.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The area is world-renowned for the Little Lakes Valley Trail, which begins just up the road and offers some of the most accessible high-country hiking in California. Anglers frequently visit for exceptional trout fishing in the lake and the nearby creek. For a taste of local charm, the Rock Creek Lake Resort is located nearby and is legendary for its homemade fruit pies and general store. This region serves as a premier gateway to the vast John Muir Wilderness.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts and nature photographers seeking rugged beauty over modern conveniences. Due to the narrow canyon roads and smaller site pads, it is best suited for small RV owners, van lifers, or those with truck campers. If you enjoy dry camping and want direct access to high-country trails and crisp mountain air, this is your perfect basecamp for an Eastern Sierra adventure.

great rock climbing. Stunning view no matter which side of the lake you're on, as long as you can find some high ground to look from.

What's great about this place is that they have a lot of very nice first come first serve spots. You'd probably stay here if you're doing the hike to Gem lake.Theres an extra bonus -the North fork of the river runs through here and there's a gorgeous trail that's quite long and shady all along the river. The camp host is very helpful. Good place to stay if you want to walk the trail it's just a few minutes away by car and the road is very doable.

There are some really fantastic and somewhat secluded Walk in sites at this campground. (There are also some weird spots that are right on the parking area, so choose wisely- if this is your thing, then great). The campground hosts Jean and Luis are absolutely the best! So friendly and they keep the grounds and bathrooms in tip top shape. Bring bug spray. Also there’s a small store at the rock Creek resort nearby, that you can purchase camping basics like bug spray, and delicious cobbler! And please remember, never leave your campfire unattended, DROWN your campfire when you leave!! They even provide buckets at each campsite for you to do so. This place is beautiful and special.
