Joshua Tree/Black Rock Canyon
Overview
Nestled in the northwest corner of Joshua Tree National Park, Black Rock Canyon offers a unique high-desert experience. Unlike many of the more secluded interior sites, this campground provides a transition between the Mojave Desert's wild landscape and the conveniences of nearby Yucca Valley. It is one of the few campgrounds in the park that features dedicated horse camps and relatively easy access to water and facilities for travelers.
Location & Surroundings
The campground sits at an elevation of 4,000 feet, providing slightly cooler temperatures and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. Visitors are surrounded by a dense forest of Joshua trees, which provides a striking backdrop for sunsets and stargazing. Its position in Yucca Valley, CA, makes it a convenient entry point for those arriving from the west, offering a distinct ecosystem compared to the lower Colorado Desert sections.
Amenities & Park Features
While Black Rock Canyon does not offer electric or sewer hookups, it is better equipped than many other NPS sites. The park features specific amenities for self-contained travelers:
- Flush toilets and seasonal potable water stations.
- A convenient on-site dump station for RV waste.
- Individual sites with picnic tables and fire rings.
Travelers should note that cellular service can be spotty, which enhances the off-grid desert experience while still being within reach of basic needs.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Hiking is the primary draw here, with the Panorama Loop Trail offering stunning vistas of the San Bernardino Mountains. The area is also excellent for birdwatching and wildlife viewing, as the local springs attract various desert creatures. For a change of pace, the quirky shops and diners of Yucca Valley are just minutes away, and the famous Pioneertown Mane Street is a short drive from the campground entrance.
Who This Park Is Best For
This location is ideal for RVers who enjoy primitive camping but prefer having basic facilities like running water and flush toilets nearby. It is perfect for hikers and photographers who want to wake up surrounded by iconic desert flora. Because it is closer to town than the park's central campsites, it suits travelers who want to explore the wilderness during the day while remaining near modern conveniences for supplies.

I’ve been to this campground three times so far, and I’ve had a good experience each time. Plenty of space at the camp site, clean bathrooms stocked with toilet paper and soap, and some nice trails nearby!

Nice campground with clean flush toilets and an easy 20 min drive to the NP entrance. We thank our NP staff for keeping it open during the shutdown!

Black Rock Canyon Campground is an excellent place for beginners to experience camping without being to remote from civilization. The campground is well kept and the park rangers are extremely helpful. Good restaurants and several markets are only a couple of miles away, so you do not need to rough it too much. I took my nephew here for his first experince camping and he loved it. Starwatching is awesome at this place!! Enjoy!!

We booked a camp spot there. Not the best one as we did not have any shade at all. You can park 2 cars and 2 tents. This campsite is not located inside Joshua Park but very close to the entrance gate (about 10minutes). This location offers easy access to easy hikes. The toilets are clean, no shower. RV damper is available. Fire pits and barbecue on each spot. Going back to Joshua tree, we would book a campsite directly inside the park. The hidden trail campground is perfect.

Amazing campsite. If you’re planning a trip to Joshua Tree this is the best campground to stay at. This camp sits at a higher elevation than the other campgrounds and is not as hot as the others. Every site has Joshua Trees surrounding it providing shade and a spectacular view. The rest rooms are flushing and where clean, there aren’t showers but they do have water available throughout the camp ground if you want to bring a solar shower set up.. Each site comes with a picnic table and a nice screened fire pit. Another great thing about this camp is that it’s right next to the town of Yucca Valley making it easy to find food and you also have good cell reception. Reminder to get up at night and take in the stars and get some pictures..
