Kakabeka Falls

Overview

Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park serves as a premier destination for RVers traveling through Northern Ontario. Known widely as the Niagara of the North, this park protects the second-highest waterfall in the province, where the Kaministiquia River drops 40 meters over ancient rock. The park offers a blend of natural wonder and accessible camping, making it a staple stop for those traversing the Trans-Canada Highway. The mist from the falls and the sound of rushing water create a unique atmosphere that defines the camping experience here.

Location & Surroundings

The park is conveniently located approximately 30 kilometers west of Thunder Bay, nestled within the rugged beauty of the Boreal forest. Its location makes it an ideal gateway for travelers exploring the Lake Superior north shore. The surrounding landscape is defined by sheer cliffs and the winding river, providing a dramatic backdrop for your stay. Despite its proximity to the highway, the camping areas are set back enough to maintain a peaceful, woodland environment surrounded by lush greenery and local wildlife.

The park is well-equipped to handle various rig sizes, primarily within the Whispering Hills Campground. Key features include:

  • Electrical hookups at many sites for modern convenience
  • Access to a trailer sanitation station and water fill-up points
  • Comfort stations featuring flush toilets and hot showers
  • On-site laundry facilities for long-term travelers

The park also maintains well-designed boardwalks and viewing platforms that ensure safe and easy access to the falls for guests of all mobility levels.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The main draw is the extensive trail system, including the Mountain Portage Trail, which offers spectacular views of the falls and the gorge below. History enthusiasts will appreciate the visitor center, which details the geological formation of the falls and the local indigenous history. Just a short drive away, you can visit Fort William Historical Park in Thunder Bay or explore the scenic hiking trails of Sleeping Giant Provincial Park. During the summer, the park’s beach area on the river provides a refreshing spot for a quick dip.

It cost us $6.50 for 3 hrs I think? There is a public washroom. The falls are gorgeous. You can see them from a few different vantage points.

First time ever being there..the beauty and strength of the water is just amazing! 😍😍 Easy to get to..the paths are well kept.. the lookouts are very well kept. If you are adventurous and don't mind bugs..go off the beaten track to the side trails that lead to the bottom of the falls!!

Even in winter, the landscape transforms into a winter wonderland, offering a picturesque setting that's a delight for nature enthusiasts. The diverse scenery throughout the different seasons ensures that each visit is a unique and refreshing experience. One of the standout features is the tranquility and serenity that envelops this destination. With significantly fewer crowds compared to other popular spots, it provides a peaceful and immersive escape into nature. Whether you're seeking solitude or a quiet hike with loved ones, this place offers the ideal setting. The availability of multiple hiking trail options is another highlight. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a casual stroller, there are two or three distinct trails to choose from. Each trail has its own charm, offering a mix of scenic beauty, wildlife encounters, and a chance to connect with the natural surroundings. Proximity to Thunder Bay is a major convenience, making it accessible within a mere 15-20 minute drive. I've been three times. Every time I go through up there, I stop in to see it. Now I've been on my own, with my parents and brother, and with my girlfriend. It is a beautiful place, with the luxury of two views. If the waterfall weren't there, the cliffs that run down beyond the falls would still be enough to bring people to see. I do recommend
