Kaweah Lake - COE/Horse Creek Campground

Overview

Horse Creek Campground is a managed US Army Corps of Engineers facility situated on the eastern end of Lake Kaweah. This rustic destination offers a scenic and serene escape into the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Unlike high-end luxury resorts, this park focuses on natural beauty and direct lake access, providing a quiet retreat for those looking to disconnect. With its location right on the water's edge, it serves as a vital recreation hub for outdoor enthusiasts visiting the San Joaquin Valley and the surrounding peaks.

Location & Surroundings

Located in the quiet community of Lemon Cove, CA, the park is surrounded by the rolling grasslands and rugged terrain characteristic of the central California landscape. The shores of Lake Kaweah dominate the visual experience, providing a vast expanse of blue that contrasts beautifully with the golden hills. Its position makes it a strategic and popular basecamp for those heading into the high country, offering easy access to Highway 198, which serves as the primary artery into the heart of the Sierras.

Amenities & Park Features

As a COE park, Horse Creek provides essential facilities designed for a traditional outdoor experience rather than modern luxuries. The campground primarily features primitive campsites without utility hookups, making it a favorite for self-contained RVs. Key park features include:

  • A centrally located dump station and potable water access.
  • Restrooms with flush toilets and coin-operated showers.
  • Individual sites with a picnic table and a heavy-duty fire ring.

This setup encourages a focused, back-to-basics camping style that allows the surrounding environment to take center stage.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for many visitors is the park's proximity to Sequoia National Park, which is located just a short twenty-minute drive away. Travelers can easily spend their days marveling at the General Sherman Tree or hiking the granite heights of Moro Rock. For those staying closer to camp, the water provides endless entertainment. The park is renowned for bass fishing and motorized boating, and a convenient boat launch is available nearby to help visitors get out on the reservoir quickly and enjoy the sun.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is an ideal fit for boondocking enthusiasts and adventurous travelers who prioritize a prime location over modern amenities. It is a fantastic choice for families seeking an affordable lakeside vacation or nature photographers looking for the perfect shot of the Sierra Nevada foothills. Because the sites do not offer electricity or water, it is best suited for prepared RV travelers who enjoy a rustic, quiet environment while remaining within striking distance of California's most famous giant forest.

24hr reservation rule is absolute trash and pointless as you have to book online anyways. Make it make sense. Place is empty. Maybe put a notice on the recreation APP for the 24 hr rule. Incompetence at it's finest. Anyways, if you're heading west and need a spot for the night, head to TACHI palace and resort casino. They welcome RVs and the place is amazing.

Water was out, restrooms and showers are often an issue so go with that in mind. I really wish they wouldn’t require a 1 day in advance reservation. Would make it nicer for locals to book same day.

So many beautiful views even at nighttime, you could see so many stars in the sky. It’s off the highway so don’t expect it to be quiet.

Such a pretty campground. Lots of wildlife, we pulled in late to hear the frogs croaking at night. My son loved the lake. Great location if you are visiting Sequoia National park.

Great place to camp! Showers were meh… and I wish they took walk in reservations so I could’ve extended my stay. Lake was beautiful. Only could figure out how to turn on one of the water spouts, but I’m sure the park ranger would help.
