Killens Pond
Overview
Killens Pond State Park serves as a lush escape in the heart of Kent County. This state-managed destination is centered around a 66-acre millpond, providing a serene environment for travelers looking to reconnect with nature while enjoying modern conveniences. Unlike basic roadside stops, this park offers a deep immersion into Delaware's woodland landscape, featuring a mix of hardwood forests and tranquil water views that change beautifully with the seasons. It is widely recognized for balancing active recreation with the quiet solitude of a traditional forest setting.
Location & Surroundings
Nestled in Felton, DE, the park is strategically positioned for both seclusion and accessibility. It is located just off Route 13, making it a convenient stop for those traveling the Delmarva Peninsula. The surrounding area is characterized by agricultural fields and quiet residential pockets, though it remains a short drive from the bustling state capital of Dover. This central Delaware location provides a perfect basecamp for exploring the entire state, from northern historic sites to southern coastal towns, all while remaining tucked away from heavy traffic.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground at Killens Pond is well-equipped for modern RVers, offering sites that primarily feature electric and water hookups. The sites are nestled among towering trees, providing ample shade and a sense of privacy between neighbors. On-site facilities include clean bathhouses, a laundry area, and a dump station for convenience. Beyond the campsites, the park is famous for the Killens Pond Water Park, which features slides and a pool during summer months, along with a boat dock where visitors can rent kayaks, canoes, or rowboats to explore the millpond.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty of activities, starting with the Pondside Nature Trail, a scenic loop perfect for hiking and birdwatching. Fishing is a major draw, with the pond supporting healthy populations of bass, perch, and crappie. For those looking to venture out, the Air Mobility Command Museum in nearby Dover offers a fascinating look at military aviation history. Additionally, the park is less than an hour's drive from the popular Delaware beaches, allowing for an easy day trip to the Atlantic coast without the nightly seaside crowds.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for family vacationers who want a mix of outdoor recreation and controlled fun, thanks to the seasonal water park and extensive playground facilities. It is also an excellent choice for kayakers and anglers who prioritize easy waterfront access. Because of its quiet, wooded sites, it appeals most to RVers who prefer a rustic, state park atmosphere over a high-density private resort. It serves as a peaceful retreat for those who appreciate natural beauty, wildlife viewing, and a slower pace of travel.

I thought this cabin was going to be haunted based on the few pictures I saw from the state park. Lo and behold, the only thing spooky was how long I slept in silence in these spectacular little cabins. These are PERFECT for a solo trip to hide from your family, a cute get away for two (or three? 🤷 👀) or the risky family trip. You DO need to bring any and everything you intend to use, but town is also 10 minutes away so don’t freak out. The trails, common areas, etc were all tidy with barely a leaf out of place. Warning: we went the third week of October and the trees drop their acorns all day which is cool. At night with a tin roof… you will awake alarmed because it sounds like a meteor ended your fragile life. But you’re fine. Bring a sound machine and fan anyway. Last, but certainly not least , the dude working the campground store/check-in is as much as a gem as this state park is. Excellent visit ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The campground is nice though the sites in the middle of the loops back right up to a site in the next loop. We were in D6 which was nice and has a slight view of the pond. The bath houses are clean but showers do not offer a lot of privacy.

We stayed in the cabins, they were very nice. Clean and well cared for. Trails are well marked and well kept. Nature center is small but has some neat friends and great information. We visited after Labor Day during the week so we were unfortunately unable to kayak on the pond. My one complaint is the lack of privacy from the other cabins. The cabins are fairly close together, which isn't a problem in and of itself, but the fire pits for each cabin are in the front and right by the path, so when your cabin neighbor has a toddler they refuse to control he only had to wander about 50' before he's at your site and trying to go inside. I feel like putting fire pits behind the cabins would give little more of a sense of privacy.

I loved Killens Pond! We stayed in mid-May, and the weather was perfect. The cabins come with T/P; you will need to pack everything else. The floors of the cabin aren't mopped by maintenance, and sometimes sticky. The porch was so dusty and filled with dead bugs, but supplied with a broom and mop, easy to fix. A/C is awesome. The cabin fit two adults comfortably. Felt very safe, needed a key code to get into the cabin, and there was another chain lock on the inside of the door. Trash dumping is very easy. Trails were nice and cleared- we did the full hike around the pond (abt 3 miles, I'm guessing) & it was very scenic!

We are a family of five with three small boys, while they are young. We have been staying in cabins, and these are some of the best along the Northeast corridor. Climate control, in cabin hot showers, kitchenette with microwave, everything you could need. There is a nice playground, awesome nature trails, really cool nature center and quick access Dover and Rehoboth Beach attractions.
