Kings Canyon/Sentinel
Overview
Sentinel Campground is a premier destination located in the heart of the Cedar Grove area within Kings Canyon National Park. Situated at an elevation of approximately 4,600 feet, this campground provides a unique opportunity to stay deep within one of the deepest canyons in North America. Unlike the giant sequoia groves found at higher elevations, this site is defined by the rushing South Fork of the Kings River and towering granite cliffs that offer a rugged, dramatic landscape for every visitor.
Location & Surroundings
To reach this destination, travelers navigate the winding Kings Canyon Scenic Byway, descending thousands of feet into the canyon floor. The surroundings are characterized by a lush riparian environment mixed with ponderosa pines and incense cedars. The massive granite canyon walls create a dramatic backdrop for every campsite, offering a sense of scale and isolation that is hard to find in more developed tourist hubs. It is a true wilderness immersion situated far from the reach of city lights.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional national park facility, Sentinel offers a rustic experience with no hookups or dump stations available on-site. Each site is equipped with a picnic table, fire ring, and a mandatory bear-resistant food locker to protect local wildlife. While the park lacks electricity and Wi-Fi, it provides essential comforts such as flush toilets and potable water stations. The sites are generally level but vary in size, so checking length limits for motorhomes and trailers is essential before arrival.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Visitors are just a short distance from some of the park’s most iconic landmarks. The Zumwalt Meadow loop offers a gentle walk through a lush floor with views of Grand Sentinel and North Dome. For those seeking adventure, the trail to Mist Falls provides a challenging hike with a rewarding water display. On warm afternoons, many travelers head to Muir Rock for a refreshing dip in the river or to simply relax on the massive flat boulders while watching the water pass by.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for self-contained RVers and tent campers who prioritize natural beauty over modern convenience. Because there are no hookups, it appeals to those who enjoy boondocking in a serene mountain atmosphere. It is a perfect fit for outdoor enthusiasts and photographers who want to be steps away from world-class hiking trails and river access without the heavy crowds often found in the more accessible parts of the Sierra Nevada.

Very low overhead clearance for RVs. If you enjoy being in a campground with a bunch of people burning their fires and smoke everywhere have fun.

Only giving a single ⭐️ because the staff was really the “B team.” The did not patrol at night during a rash of bear incidents. We had a sleepless night here and only saw a ranger after 8am. Bears walking around pushing on doors, car windows. One camper left at 2am after the bear pushed on his trailer door and broke his truck window. I camp a lot and most campgrounds would take aggressive bear activity seriously. Not here unfortunately.

We loved our stay here. The campground is way off the beaten path, but appears to stay full during busy season. The bathrooms can be a bit of a walk. No showers in the campground, but they do have pay showers next door. All campsites have a bear box on site. Just be sure to remember to also lock your car doors!

Pros, 5 min hike to the river, our campsite was very spacious. Market 10min away if you drive. Clean restrooms that flush. Not too many mosquito. Cons: No RV dump and fill-up site, there was a bear who came by frequently, some other campsites were very narrow which could make RV parking difficult.

Deep in Kings Canyon, the location is great for seeing the sights and proximity to great hiking trails. The sites are decent sized and there is quite a bit of shade, though some sites have full sun. It can get hot as the elevation is quite a bit lower than Grant Grove. The restrooms are well maintained and each has a dish washing station. There are bear boxes and their use is mandatory.
