Kisatchie/Kincaid

Overview

Kincaid Lake Recreation Area, nestled within the Kisatchie National Forest near Gardner, LA, offers a serene escape into the rolling hills and pine forests of central Louisiana. This destination is defined by its expansive 2,600-acre lake, providing a picturesque backdrop for campers seeking a deep connection with nature. It is a government-managed facility that prioritizes the preservation of the surrounding ecosystem while offering accessible outdoor recreation. The gentle terrain and lakeside views create a calming atmosphere for those looking to disconnect from the modern world.

Location & Surroundings

The park is conveniently located just off Highway 28, west of Alexandria, providing a secluded retreat that remains accessible for large rigs. The surrounding landscape features towering loblolly pines and mixed hardwoods that create a dense, green canopy throughout the year. Because it is part of the Calcasieu Ranger District, visitors are surrounded by miles of protected wilderness. This location serves as a gateway to the diverse flora and fauna of the region, where the sounds of local wildlife replace the hum of city traffic.

Amenities & Park Features

RV travelers typically frequent Loop A, which provides essential services for a comfortable stay. The facilities at the park include the following features:

  • Water and electrical hookups at most sites in Loop A
  • Large, paved parking pads with picnic tables and fire rings
  • Access to modern bathhouses equipped with warm showers

For those looking to enjoy the water, the park includes multiple boat launches and a designated swimming area. The nearby trailheads provide immediate access to the forest’s expansive network of pathways for exploration.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water-based activities are the primary draw, with fishing for largemouth bass and sunfish being a popular pastime for visitors. Beyond the lake, the area offers several recreational opportunities:

  • Hiking the Wild Azalea Trail, the longest trail in Louisiana
  • Mountain biking through the rugged forest terrain
  • Visiting the Alexandria Zoological Park just a short drive away

The proximity to the city of Alexandria also allows for easy visits to local museums and historic plantation sites that highlight the cultural heritage of the region.

Really a hidden gem of Louisiana, no one knows this place. Nice and clean at the lake. Watch your speed on the way there, they get tricky on the speed limits and plot on the out of towners. The lake is easy for any age with the ramps and easy for wheel chair accessibility in a sense, coming back up is the hard part.

Its very nice. We prefer to go on Sundays so its not so busy or even on a day where it rains lightly or on and off where there are fewer people. Its 5.00 for the day. Pretty clean. There's light vegetation in the swimming area that gets worse the deeper it gets. Loved to go here for fun in the sun. ❤️

We tried to bike the Kincaid Lake trail, but we couldn't make the loop since the trail is not maintained all the way. Lots of fallen trees, branches and parts were not mowed at all. Given the snaky ( at least one cotton mouth) area, we were not comfortable trying to find the trail. It would have been great if signs would have warned us.

The little beach was the perfect spot to relax and cool off in the water. The facilities are well maintained and I’m definitely looking forward to our next trip here.
