Kleskun Hill Campground
Overview
Kleskun Hill Campground offers a unique camping experience in what is often called the northernmost badlands of Alberta. Located within a protected park, this site allows visitors to immerse themselves in a prehistoric landscape that dates back millions of years. It is a place where the rolling prairie meets dramatic erosion, revealing colorful layers of earth and fossilized remains from the age of dinosaurs that once roamed this specific region of the Peace Country.
Location & Surroundings
Situated about 20 kilometers east of the city of Grande Prairie, the campground provides a serene escape from the urban hustle while remaining easily accessible for travelers. The park protects one of the last remaining pieces of the original fescue prairie in the region. Visitors will find themselves surrounded by diverse flora, including rare cacti and wildflowers, with a landscape defined by the distinctive and weathered hills that rise from the flat plains.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a rustic destination focused on nature and heritage rather than modern resort-style luxury. The park features over a dozen unserviced campsites perfect for self-contained RVs or those seeking a traditional, quiet camping experience under the stars. Key park features include:
- Large fire pits and picnic tables at every site
- Clean pit toilets and access to seasonal non-potable water
- A modern playground for children
- Direct access to the Kleskun Hill Museum grounds
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw for many is the network of winding hiking trails that lead through the badlands and up the hills for panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. History enthusiasts can explore the Kleskun Hill Museum, which features relocated historical buildings like an old one-room schoolhouse and a pioneer church. It is also a premier destination for landscape photography and birdwatching, especially during the long summer twilights of Northern Alberta.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is best suited for travelers who prioritize tranquility and natural scenery over full hookups and commercial amenities. It is a fantastic choice for families looking for an educational outdoor experience or RVers seeking a quiet, scenic stopover with deep historical roots. If you are a fan of geology, paleontology, or local history, the unique terrain and preserved pioneer village make this a standout location for your next trip.

Beautiful views from the hills, trails to walk, playground, overnight camping, outhouses. There’s a unique selection of flora around the area which is fun to see.

Nice small campground beside the Provincial Park and historical site/museum. The bathroom was very clean when we were there. The fact that you have to pay for firewood whether you have a fire or not seems a bit of a cash grab?

Okay, so Google doesn't apparently distinguish between "hotel" and "campground" so my ratings are for the campground. Beautiful and quiet spot within a short drive of Grande Prairie. Nice campground with decent privacy, nice playground, outhouses and a shower building, and lots to see. There's no power or hookups, but no big deal for me. Lots of trails to walk and hills to climb, and it's a high point in the area. I included a photo of our site, as there are lots of photos of the location already available. Keep in mind that the campground and museum area are run by the County of Grande Prairie, while the surrounding park area is run by Alberta Parks, so there are two websites to check. My only wish would be to have Alberta Parks put in a bit more structure, like more designated trails as right now it's a bit of a free-for-all which has to be hard on the environment we're trying to protect.

I love the varying difficulty level of hikes you can choose here. The playground and washrooms (outhouses in the offseason), picnic tables, and day use for pits make it a stellar place to spend the day with the family or meet up with friends to eat, hike, and play. If and don't forget the awesome historical village that you can walk around and enjoy. Lots to do for everyone from young to old!

A beautiful place to go camping with the kids!!!! I loved that you have the playground for the kids in front of each Spot, so they get up in the morning and go play and you don't worry about how far away because you can see them from your camping space. You can go hiking, explore the museum !!!!! Excellent customer service. We went in the middle of October so we couldn't shower hahaha the showers were already closed for the season and the museum too. But was a very beautiful experience ☺️
