Kootenai/Rexford Bench

Overview

Kootenai/Rexford Bench offers a serene escape on the shores of Lake Koocanusa in northwestern Montana. As a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers facility, the park is known for its spacious layouts and immediate proximity to the water. The campground provides a mix of sun-drenched sites and shaded spots, all while maintaining a peaceful, natural atmosphere. It serves as an ideal home base for travelers looking to immerse themselves in the rugged beauty of the Tobacco Valley.

Location & Surroundings

Situated near the small town of Rexford, the park sits on a high bench overlooking the vast Lake Koocanusa reservoir. The surrounding landscape is defined by the dramatic peaks of the Whitefish Range and the Purcell Mountains. Dense forests of pine and fir provide a sense of seclusion, while the shimmering water offers a constant focal point for recreation. The area is rich in wildlife, and visitors often spot bald eagles and osprey soaring above the shoreline.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features 40 well-maintained campsites, with several offering 30-amp electric hookups for RV travelers. Guests have access to essential modern conveniences, including flush toilets and hot showers, which are a welcome upgrade from typical forest service campgrounds. For those bringing watercraft, the facility provides a convenient multi-lane boat ramp and a designated swimming beach. Other notable features include a playground for families, picnic shelters for group gatherings, and a dump station for self-contained units.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Lake Koocanusa is a premier destination for boating and trophy fishing, particularly for rainbow trout and kokanee salmon. Just a short drive away, the town of Eureka offers local shops and historical sites like the Tobacco Valley Historical Village. Hikers can access portions of the Pacific Northwest National Scenic Trail, which winds through the nearby wilderness. The Kootenai River, located just below the Libby Dam, provides world-class fly-fishing opportunities for those looking to explore the region further.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is best suited for outdoor enthusiasts and boaters who prioritize direct access to the water. It is a fantastic choice for families looking for a clean, safe environment with a community atmosphere and easy swimming access. Always peaceful it's clean and has the best campground bathrooms. Great water to swim and boat in.

Mid-week, this campground is a treat. Highly developed for a Forest Service campground. Very busy on summer weekends. Good access to the lake. We very much enjoyed kayaking in Abayance Bay - amazing, beautiful place! There are lots of FCFS sites, if you can get here by Thursday for the weekend. If you are able to boon-dock and don't mind leveling the trailer, or you are tent camping, try Tobacco River just down the road or Douglas Hill on the other side of the bay.

This was one of the nicest campgrounds where we have ever camped. Beautiful and HUGE sites. Clean bathrooms. Great hiking. You can buy firewood from a guy in the town of Rexford.

l've been coming to Rexford Bench for over 4 years, and sadly, the experience has gone downhill. What used to be a peaceful place to camp has turned into something closer to a free-for-all. Kids constantly running and yelling well into the night, generators humming away with little regard for quiet hours, and a general lack of respect from other campers. It doesn't seem like rules are being enforced anymore or if they are, no one's paying attention. This place used to feel like a great getaway, but lately it's felt more like a crowded party spot. Disappointing to see such a beautiful location lose the quiet charm that once made it special.

We were fortunate enough to stay on a night that had availability without any reservations. Currently $24 per night for a single spot.
