Kootenai/Rocky Gorge

Overview

Situated within the vast expanse of the Kootenai National Forest, Rocky Gorge offers a serene escape on the eastern shores of Lake Koocanusa. Located just south of the quiet town of Eureka, MT, this destination is defined by its dramatic landscapes and direct access to one of the region’s most impressive reservoirs. It serves as a primary gateway for travelers looking to immerse themselves in the rugged beauty of Northwest Montana while remaining within reach of the Canadian border and the historic Tobacco Valley.

Location & Surroundings

The campground is perched along the Lake Koocanusa reservoir, providing expansive views of the surrounding Whitefish Range and the Purcell Mountains. The terrain here is a unique blend of dense evergreen forest and open, grassy slopes, offering a deep sense of seclusion. Travelers will find themselves surrounded by towering ponderosa pines and crisp mountain air, with the shimmering turquoise waters of the lake serving as a stunning backdrop for the terraced camping loops that descend toward the shoreline.

Amenities & Park Features

As a developed Forest Service site, the amenities prioritize natural integration and functionality for outdoor enthusiasts. The park provides paved parking spurs designed to accommodate a variety of rig sizes, alongside accessible vault toilets and picnic tables. While individual sites do not offer electricity or sewer hookups, potable water is available via hand pumps throughout the grounds. The facility is highlighted by its high-quality boat ramp and floating dock, which are essential for visitors planning to spend their days navigating the ninety-mile-long reservoir.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The area is a paradise for water-based recreation, including motorized boating, paddleboarding, and fishing for kokanee salmon. Beyond the water, visitors can hike the trails within the Ten Lakes Scenic Area or explore the history of the region at the Tobacco Valley Historical Village. A scenic drive along Highway 37 leads to the Kootenai Falls and Swinging Bridge, where the river thunders through a canyon, providing one of the most photographed natural landmarks in the state of Montana.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is an ideal match for self-contained RV travelers who prefer the tranquility of dry camping over the bustle of a full-service resort. It is perfectly suited for boaters and anglers who want to wake up within sight of the water. Those seeking a peaceful, rustic retreat will appreciate the lack of urban noise and the opportunity to disconnect, making it a favorite for outdoor adventurers who value scenery and lake access above all else.

We have camped here 3 times now. Love the place but they have changed camp hosts. Previous host was on the ball, kept the restrooms clean and stopped by to see if everything was ok. Current camp host is a ghost, we were there 3 days, camped right next to a restroom and never saw the host.

Definitely quiet and dark. It might seem like a strange campground. It was a log staging area when they built the lake. There’s 19 fire rings and tables. The bathrooms are clean when the host is on site. The Host has been super each time I was there. Boat ramp and dock are available. But this is a Bear camp so pay attention.

What a beautiful place to stop and enjoy. We don’t stay the night but we stopped on our way do glacier and I am glad we did. The dogs got out and got a drink and stretched their legs. Just a couple people were camping but no one on the beach. Amazing and peaceful! And the blue water is beautiful!!

Fishing was lousy, mostly due to Fisheries and Army Corps mismanagement. Beautiful lake and camping facilities.
