Lahontan SRA
Overview
Lahontan State Recreation Area serves as a premier high-desert oasis along the Carson River. Spread across the sprawling 69-mile shoreline of the Lahontan Reservoir, this destination offers a mix of developed campgrounds and primitive beach camping. RVers often flock here for the expansive water views and the opportunity to experience Nevada’s rugged beauty while staying close to modern conveniences in nearby towns. It is a vital recreational hub for Northern Nevada residents and cross-country travelers alike.
Location & Surroundings
Situated between Fallon and Silver Springs, the park is easily accessed via Highway 50, often famously called the Loneliest Road in America. The landscape is defined by the Carson River drainage, creating a lush contrast against the surrounding sagebrush plains and desert mountains. Travelers will find themselves surrounded by massive cottonwood trees and sandy shorelines, providing a unique high-desert waterfront experience that is relatively rare in this part of the Great Basin region.
Amenities & Park Features
The park offers diverse options for RVers, specifically at the Silver Springs Beach area which features 69 sites equipped with utility hookups. Visitors can utilize the modern restroom facilities and showers located within the developed campgrounds to stay comfortable during their trip. For those who prefer a more off-grid experience, the park allows camping directly on many beach areas when conditions permit. Essential services for campers include multiple boat ramps, picnic tables, a dump station, and potable water.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Boating and fishing are the primary draws, with the reservoir regularly stocked with walleye, white bass, and catfish. Just a short drive away, history buffs can explore the Grimes Point Prehistoric Rock Art Site to view ancient petroglyphs. For birders, the Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge offers incredible wildlife viewing opportunities, while the nearby Sand Mountain Recreation Area provides massive, singing sand dunes for off-roading and desert exploration enthusiasts looking for a thrill.
Who This Park Is Best For
This location is ideal for water sports enthusiasts and families who enjoy a blend of active recreation and relaxing beach days. Because of its large, open layout and easily accessible roads, it is also a great fit for large RV units and big rigs that may find tighter mountain campgrounds difficult to navigate. Whether you are looking for a convenient basecamp for regional desert exploration or a quiet spot to fish at sunset, this park delivers a versatile Nevada adventure.

We like to camp at beach 7. The showers and flush toilets are near by. As well as a water spigot. There are some shade trees too. Beach 5 is also nice but only has vault toilets. You still have to goto beach 7 for showers and water. There is a dump station near the Ranger's station/ entry.

Lahontan State recreation area is in the Silver Springs are not far from Churchill State Park. There is camping here under the Cottonwoods close to the shore. Also two day use areas with restrooms, picnic tables, and grills. Two boat launches are available. Not a lot of hiking trails, the Tufa trail is the only one I have seen. Along with the Tufa trailhead, there is a new historical marker about Williams Station off of Fisherman's Point. Fishing is mainly warm water fish; bass, Walleye, Wiper, Carp, and Catfish. A nice park and not crowded which is a big plus!

Very affordable camping option for cyclists like me ($2). No specific tent site , you basically find your own spot. Great view, serene and quiet, at least during shoulder season. Very limited service, you can tell State Parks are not a priority in this state.

Great place to take the family for camping or fishing. One of the few places you can camp right on the beach. The one down side is there’s not much shade or trees on most of the lake. Bring a canopy. It can get windy as well. Secure it good.
