Lake Ashtabula - COE/Mel Rieman

Overview

Lake Ashtabula - Mel Rieman is a tranquil getaway managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on the shores of a sprawling 27-mile long reservoir. Located near Valley City, North Dakota, this park offers a serene escape into the rolling prairie landscape. The reservoir was created by the construction of the Baldhill Dam and has since become a cornerstone for regional water recreation. Travelers appreciate the park's focus on natural preservation and high-quality maintenance, making it a reliable destination for those seeking a quiet retreat away from urban noise. It serves as a central hub for outdoor enthusiasts exploring the Sheyenne River Valley.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the heart of the Sheyenne River Valley, the park is surrounded by verdant hillsides and scenic overlooks. The reservoir itself provides a vast blue contrast to the golden North Dakota plains. Because it is positioned away from major highways, visitors enjoy a significant reduction in noise pollution. The surrounding area features native woodlands, which provide shade and habitat for local wildlife like deer and various migratory birds, creating a truly immersive nature experience that feels worlds away from the daily grind.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground offers a mix of electric and non-electric sites designed to accommodate various RV sizes. Key features include:

  • 50-amp electrical hookups available at many sites for modern convenience.
  • On-site boat ramp and fish cleaning station for easy lake access.
  • Potable water hydrants and well-maintained vault toilets located throughout the loop.
  • Playground equipment and spacious picnic areas with fire rings.

These facilities ensure that while the setting is rustic, guests have the essentials needed for a comfortable and functional stay near the water. The sites are known for being level and spacious, providing plenty of room for slide-outs.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to occupy their time, starting with world-class fishing for walleye and yellow perch. The park is also a significant point of interest for hikers, as a portion of the North Country National Scenic Trail winds through the region, offering miles of exploration. Just a short drive away, Valley City, known as the City of Bridges, offers historic charm and the impressive Hi-Line Railroad Bridge. Visitors can also explore the Barnes County Historical Society for a taste of local heritage and prairie history.

Who This Park Is Best For

Great campground with decent amenities. The sites are a bit tight with only room for one vehicle and a camper or tent. A few of them are awkwardly placed. The beach is a long ways from the camp sites so its best to drive. No fishing pier here, boat ramp has a large open parking area and a great fish cleaning station. Showers are at the end of the campground and adequate.

Nice, smaller campground. There is a nice beach area and playground not far from the camp area. The loop that has sites 15-19 has an awkward route to the dump - you’ll need to travel outside the loop then backtrack going back into the loop to dump. I did not see a shower house. There is a small restaurant near the beach. Travel through the beach parking lot and down the hill to find it.

First time staying at that camp site. We really enjoyed ourselves. very peaceful there. people were friendly and I liked how the camp host came around to check on everyone the evening we had some weather come thru and they wanted to make sure we knew where the safe place was at. and to make sure we knew about the weather warnings.

Nice camping spot. Bathrooms were ok but had some odor because the type of bathroom. Water access, fire pit, and power access. Accessible camp host. Boat ramp access with dock for fishing and cleaning board. Very good separation between sites. We will come here again.

Full disclosure, I am biased because I grew up camping on Lake Ashtabula and Mel Rieman. However, I think anyone with a tent all the way up to a mega RV would enjoy what this campground has to offer. A huge beach, clean facilities and a friendly camp host for starters. Add a nice boat ramp with fish cleaning facilities and plenty of open water for fishing, tubing/water skiing and swimming. The Hungry Pelican offers treats and beverages for both young and old, pontoon rentals and more. Don't even think twice. Book your stay at Mel Reiman Recreation Area. You won't be disappointed.
