Lake Chicot

Overview

Lake Chicot State Park offers a serene getaway on the shores of the largest oxbow lake in North America. Located in the heart of the Mississippi Delta, this park is defined by its sweeping views of ancient cypress trees and calm waters. It serves as a vital stop for travelers seeking both natural beauty and a connection to the unique geography of Southeast Arkansas. The park manages to blend historical significance with modern outdoor recreation, providing a quiet atmosphere that highlights the region's diverse ecosystem and peaceful lakefront living.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Lake Village, AR, the park sits along the curved banks of a natural oxbow lake formed by the Mississippi River centuries ago. The surrounding landscape is flat and fertile, characterized by vast agricultural fields and wetlands that support a wide array of wildlife. Because the park is positioned along the Mississippi Flyway, visitors often witness incredible seasonal bird migrations. The proximity to the Mississippi River adds a sense of scale and historical importance to the area's geography, making it a standout destination in the Delta.

Amenities & Park Features

The park caters to modern travelers with 122 campsites, many of which feature full hookups for a comfortable and convenient stay. Guests can take advantage of the on-site marina, which offers boat rentals and fuel, making it easy to get out on the water. Other notable features include a seasonal swimming pool, a well-stocked visitor center with educational exhibits, and clean bathhouse facilities. For those traveling with families, the accessible fishing piers and shaded picnic areas provide plenty of space for daytime relaxation and community gatherings.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find endless opportunities for world-class fishing and boating on the expansive lake. The waters are famous for crappie, bass, and bream, drawing anglers from across the country throughout the year. Just a short drive away, the town of Lake Village offers local dining and historical sites, such as the Guachoya Cultural Art Center. Nature lovers should explore the birdwatching trails, where it is common to spot great blue herons and bald eagles nesting in the towering cypress canopy that lines the water's edge.

We saw some of the bad reviews before arriving to our cabin, and felt apprehensive about what we would get. When we arrived, all of our worries melted away and we were pleasantly surprised by the accommodations. In particular, we found the cabin to be clean, well equipped, and comfortable. Due to the size of our party, we made use of both the bed and couch bed. As someone who has slept on several couch beds in the past month, this was by far the most comfortable I’ve experienced. The visitor center closes at 5pm, but if you arrive after-hours, they will post check-in information on their front door for you. That said, there is no way to reach the facilities after 5pm (prior to checking in to your cabin). Overall, great accommodations, great views, and would love to visit again soon!

Visited a couple of nights in mid-August. Campground was clean and well kept. Very few campers while we were there. Very quiet and enjoyable. View was great. We had site 9 which had a great view of the river. Beautiful sunsets. A bit buggy at night but it was mid-August, so was expected.

Lake was beautiful. Cabins appeared to be clean but need updated. My niece found a tick and bedbugs in the bed which we let the office know about. Smoke alarm super sensitive. It went off when bread (no butter) was put in the toaster, cooking bacon, and baking croissants in the oven. All done at different times. Spiderwebs everywhere! They could at least be swept down to give a nice appearance. Basketball court extremely small. Pool closed 2 hrs early for no reason; at least none was given. The clerk just said I don't know. Pavilion was nice and playground seemed to be updated. Office clerks were very nice and apologetic.

Besides the fish cleaning station having problems, it is a pretty nice state park. And they always seem to have some problems with the Swarming pool.

Lovely park. We stayed for 3 nights and enjoyed the evening sunset cruise. The park guides were wonderfully knowledgeable and friendly. This park is focused on Lake Chicot and the fishing and exploration of the lake. Cell phone service is poor to very poor. WiFi is available at the bait shop. Be aware that the park is relatively small, and the walking opportunities are very limited. Construction is ongoing for more than half the campsites. The walking trail was partially closed for construction, but the portion that was open was nicely paved and ADA accessible. The pool was closed while we were there and looked like it was in need of some cleaning.
