Lake Hudson SRA

Overview

Lake Hudson State Recreation Area offers a tranquil retreat within the rolling hills of Southeast Michigan. Spanning over 2,700 acres, this park is most famous for being Michigan's first designated Dark Sky Preserve. While many come for the water, the primary draw is the chance to witness the cosmos without the interference of city lights. It provides a more rustic, nature-centric experience compared to high-density commercial resorts, stretching across a mosaic of marshes and meadows.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just south of Clayton, Michigan, the park is located in Lenawee County, making it accessible from both Detroit and Ann Arbor. The landscape is characterized by a mix of open fields, dense woods, and the expansive 500-acre Lake Hudson. This inland lake is unique because it is managed as a no-wake lake, ensuring the atmosphere remains quiet and the water stays calm for paddlers. The surrounding rural countryside offers a scenic backdrop for those driving larger rigs through the gentle turns of the Michigan landscape.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground at Lake Hudson is classified as semi-modern, catering to RVers who prefer a peaceful environment over luxury amenities. Key features include:

  • Approximately 50 sites with electric hookups available for RVs.
  • A no-wake boat launch providing easy access to the water.
  • Vault toilets and hand pumps for water distributed throughout the camp.
  • A designated swimming area with a sandy beach for summer use.

The spacious sites provide enough room for varied RV lengths, though the park remains popular for its intimate connection to the outdoors. Each site includes a fire ring and picnic table for traditional camping.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Fishing is a major highlight, as Lake Hudson is recognized as one of the premier muskie fishing spots in the state. Beyond the water, the park is a destination for hunters during the appropriate seasons and hikers who enjoy the varied terrain. For a change of pace, the Michigan International Speedway is a short drive away in Brooklyn, offering a different kind of excitement. Nature lovers will also appreciate the proximity to the Irish Hills region, allowing for a full itinerary of outdoor exploration.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for RV travelers who value stargazing and solitude over resort-style amenities. It is a perfect fit for amateur astronomers, birdwatchers, and anglers looking for a quiet weekend on the water. It is best suited for those who bring their own supplies and enjoy the simplicity of a campfire under a brilliantly clear night sky. If you enjoy a boondocking-lite experience where you have power but remain immersed in a rugged setting, Lake Hudson State Recreation Area is a hidden gem.

We visited once at the end of September which was so peaceful! We took the short walk from the dark sky park to the beach front. It was definitely worth our drive down! I also came last night to see the northern lights at the dark sky preserve, and WOW. The stars and sky were gorgeous and I love having a preserve so close!

Overall Experience: Extremely Disappointing My husband and I drove a significant distance from Kokomo, Indiana, excited to spend five nights over the 4th of July weekend at this recreational area. Unfortunately, due to a series of unacceptable issues, we packed up and made the weary drive home after just two nights. Our first site was immediately problematic. It was situated on such a severe slope that we needed a ladder just to reach the front door, leaving it five feet off the ground, and access to the back of our trailer where our kitchen was located was near impossible. To make matters worse, the entire site was foul: it was heavily covered in dog waste, resulting in a terrible stench and an abundance of large flies. The logistical setup was equally poor. The hookups were ridiculously far from our rig, requiring two extension cords and spanning 60 to 70 feet. While there were closer hookups on the opposite side, we were unable to use them as a rude neighbor was using every available outlet. Finally, the firewood we purchased was delivered so late that we had already gone to bed, and it was left unattended by the road, 50 to 60 feet from our rig.  Good thing the roads were unlit or I am sure someone would have made off with our firewood. Hoping to salvage the trip, we switched to a new site the next day. While the slope and smell were resolved, we discovered there was zero shade, leaving us exposed to temperatures of 96 degrees. After one sweltering night, we were exhausted and slightly toasted by the sun. We made the decision to cut our reservation short, feeling disappointed and out of pocket. While the staff at the check in kiosk were friendly, the overall poor condition and suitability of the sites, combined with the extreme heat and lack of preparedness, meant this was simply not the space for us. We will not be returning.

We spent a weekend camping and fishing, we had a blast. We used the hiking trail from the campground to the dark zone. It was well maintained and easy to see. We hiked in the daylight but it could be possible in the dark with proper flashlights. The campground was nice with each spot spread out and decently quiet in the evening. Electric hookup only. No showers or running water but they do have a bathroom outhouse situation (vault toilet). The fishing was good. Some of the campsites offer an opportunity to fish from the campsite with direct access to the lake. Each site has a fire pit but no grate for grilling. If you want to grill over the fire you will need bring your own grate. If you found this review helpful please give a 👍.

Great place to get away. It is semi-primitive with no running water or sewer, but it does have electricity, although I had to go out and buy a 100-foot power cord due to the electrical box being so far from the main setup area. As previously mentioned, Lake Hudson is a great place to get away from it all. There are trails, a beach with picnic areas, boat launches, lots of wildlife, but most of all, serenity.

Absolutely beautiful and peaceful place. Unfortunately smelled like manure at our campsite but other than that it is a perfect place to camp and kayak.
