Lake McConaughy SRA/Cedar View Campground
Overview
Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area, particularly the Cedar View Campground, serves as a premier destination for those visiting Nebraska’s largest reservoir. Located on the northwestern edge of the "Big Mac," this park provides an expansive landscape where the water meets the high plains. It offers a more tranquil atmosphere than the busy southern beaches, allowing travelers to truly immerse themselves in the scale and natural beauty of this massive inland sea. This area is known for its wide-open spaces and direct access to the water, making it a staple for outdoor enthusiasts.
Location & Surroundings
Positioned roughly 20 miles from the town of Ogallala, NE, the campground sits along the rugged north shore. The surrounding area is characterized by the unique topography of the Nebraska Sandhills, featuring rolling prairie and sandy shorelines. The elevated position of many sites provides unobstructed views of the reservoir, making it a scenic spot for photographers and nature lovers who enjoy the contrast of blue water against golden grasslands. The location is far enough from city lights to offer exceptional stargazing opportunities.

cuz why
Campground was decent, a little buggy where I was at. Camp host was nice and helpful. There is a train that goes by, so expected train horns off and on overnight. Site 40/41 has a nice view of the lake.

The train. My god the train. It went by every single hour from 9pm-4am. I will not return to this camp because of the train. I thought the moonlight was so bright until I left my tent and realized it was the floodlights from the train tracks. Chuck the camp host was great and I basically had the place to myself. Very clean and well maintained.

Very far from the water right now as the levels are super low. Beautiful site and super clean. If you want a hike to the water for activities this isn't the spot right now. If you want a good place to camp and have some outdoor chill time this place is perfect. Chuck was our camp host and he is super knowledgeable and kind!!

We camped here with our little kids and there was a train somewhere close that comes by extremely frequently at night. We ended up leaving after just 1 night due to the train. Otherwise the camp site was fine enough and we enjoyed the beach that was close by, but we did have to drive to it.

Visited pre season and had a pick of FCFS sites. Chuck is a friendly host. Many sites are 90° back ins. There are a few at an angle. We endured a pretty nasty storm, but stayed safe.
