Lake McConaughy SRA/Little Thunder Campground
Overview
Little Thunder Campground provides a scenic retreat within the Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area. Situated on the north shore, it offers a more relaxed environment compared to the bustling southern beaches. This area is widely known for its expansive reservoir views and convenient access to the rugged beauty of the Nebraska Sandhills. It serves as a prime base for those looking to explore the state's largest lake while enjoying the relative comfort of designated, level campsites.
Location & Surroundings
Located north of Ogallala, NE, the campground sits on a bluff overlooking the clear blue waters of the reservoir. The terrain is characterized by white sandy beaches and rolling prairie landscapes. Because it is positioned on the north side of the lake near the Cedar Vue area, visitors often experience less traffic, making it a peaceful spot to watch the sunrise. The surrounding area is vast, emphasizing a sense of wide-open space and natural tranquility.
Amenities & Park Features
The park is well-equipped for RV travelers, featuring 30 and 50-amp electric hookups at several of its sites. While individual sewer hookups are not available at the pads, a communal dump station and fresh water hydrants are easily accessible within the SRA. Guests have access to modern restrooms and well-maintained showers, providing a level of comfort during multi-day stays. The sites are generally spacious and positioned to offer views of the water or the hills.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Water recreation is the main draw, with opportunities for world-class walleye fishing and motorized boating. Just a short drive away, visitors can explore the massive Kingsley Dam or visit the Lake McConaughy Visitor Center to learn about the area's history. For a change of pace, the nearby city of Ogallala offers a glimpse into the Old West at Front Street and Cowboy Museum, reflecting the region's rich cattle-driving and pioneer heritage.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for active outdoor enthusiasts who prioritize water access and scenic vistas over resort-style luxuries. It is a fantastic choice for families looking for a beach-like atmosphere in the heart of the Great Plains and for anglers seeking a productive day on the water. If you enjoy a scenic and functional camping experience where the focus remains on the great outdoors and starry nights, Little Thunder is a perfect fit.

Lots of stickers in the grassy areas. Not good for walking your dog. Other than that it was a nice camp ground. The lake has receded a lot from the camp site though.

A beautiful campground with showers that run on tokens and indoor bathrooms. Be careful, there are “puncturevine (Tribulus terrestris), also known as goathead, caltrop, or tackweed”. These are horribly painful to my dog and I. Make sure to have proper footwear and be cautious where little feet and paws step. There is also a train next to this campground, that contributes to a lot of rail noise and horns. Outside of these dreaded spicy plants this campground is great.

Dirty and unkempt. Showers are disgusting. There is only electric hookup..no water or sewer. Dump station available. Ground is covered with pricker burrs. Train runs all night. Rv was filled with small gnats and flies after a few hours.

The water levels are very low so keep that in mind as you plan your trip. This campground has a good safe path to the beach if you are walking it on foot but bring what you need for the journey if it's a hot day or you don't want to take too many trips. Clean campsites, decent bathrooms and showers are manageable!!

It is a quiet place to camp. It is a small campground compared to what it could be being at Lake McConaughey. The directions to our campground once we went through the gate were poor. We were pulling an RV and ended up on a sand dirt path and had to turn around. It is dog friendly. We didn't leave the campsite, so we didn't use any other parts of the campground.
