Lake Morena (San Diego County Park)

Overview

Lake Morena County Park offers a unique blend of high-desert and mountain scenery located in the foothills of eastern San Diego County. Spanning over 3,000 acres, this regional park is centered around its namesake reservoir, providing a refreshing natural escape for those traveling through Southern California. At an elevation of 3,000 feet, the park experiences distinct seasons, offering cooler temperatures than the valley floor and a crisp, wilderness atmosphere that feels worlds away from the urban sprawl of San Diego.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the quiet community of Campo, the park is nestled within the Laguna Mountains. The landscape is characterized by rugged rock formations, oak groves, and coastal sage scrub. Because it sits in a transition zone between the desert and the coast, the surrounding environment is diverse and visually striking. The park is a significant stop for those exploring the remote reaches of the county, providing a peaceful backdrop of rolling hills and open skies that are perfect for stargazing away from city lights.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground is well-equipped to handle various camping styles, featuring 86 sites that cater to both tents and trailers. RV travelers will appreciate the mix of convenience and nature provided within the grounds. Key features include:

  • Full hookup sites and partial hookup options
  • Clean restrooms with coin-operated hot showers
  • A covered pavilion and communal picnic areas
  • 8 miles of multi-use hiking and biking trails

The park also features a convenient boat launch and a playground, making it an accessible destination for active families seeking an outdoor retreat.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts often use Lake Morena as a basecamp for world-class trekking, as the Pacific Crest Trail passes directly through the park. Anglers visit for the chance to catch bass, bluegill, and catfish, while birdwatchers can spot numerous local species along the water's edge. Just a short drive away, history buffs can explore the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum in Campo, which offers vintage train excursions. For those interested in local history, the Motor Transport Museum is another unique nearby stop featuring antique industrial vehicles.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for travelers who prefer a rustic, nature-focused experience over a highly manicured resort environment. It is a haven for PCT hikers and families looking for a traditional camping experience with plenty of space to roam. If you enjoy fishing, hiking, and quiet evenings by a campfire, Lake Morena is a perfect fit. It is particularly well-suited for boondockers and outdoor adventurers who want the convenience of hookups while still feeling completely immersed in the California backcountry.

Love to come camping here with the family in the late fall, it's typically great weather that time of year and you can book last minute (not as full as state campgrounds) The county runs a tight operation, holding tight to a strict rules to ensure everyone enjoys their experience. Our young kids love biking around the campground paths and playing with other kids, scrambling on rocks with great views overlooking the lake. Clean and robust bathroom amenities. Majority of sites have shade from giant oak trees. There was a backup checking in at the entrance gate on a Friday night. The attendee allowed us to drive around the line and checkin in the morning which was super helpful allowing us to get setup.

This is our second year staying here. Shower bathrooms open 24 hours. PCT trails the edge of it. PCT tent camping site available. Beautiful views Playground for the kids. Boat launch and fishing. Turkey, deer, rabbits, owl, birds and the local resident across the street that has dogs that like to bark. A walk to the Malt Shop is worth the trip.

Spent 3 nights camping at Lake Morena. Super clean campground. Bathrooms are clean and accessible. 2 shower stalls in the women's side. Plenty of easy walking trails. I reserved partial hook ups. Water and power provided. No sewer. Very reasonable rates. 3 nights and 2 dogs ($1 per dog) was $98. Fishing if you want. Boats available to rent. The lake is very low from what it used to be. Still picturesque scenery and plenty of bird watching. The last morning, sitting outside having a cup of coffee and 4 deer walked thru the campground. The ranger station sells firewood. All the park staff were very nice and keep a close eye on things. I will definitely be back soon.
