Lake Ogallala SRA

Overview

Lake Ogallala State Recreation Area serves as a peaceful alternative to the larger, more bustling waters nearby. Known locally as the Little Lake, this 320-acre reservoir is nestled at the foot of Kingsley Dam. It offers a tranquil setting where the focus remains on the natural beauty of the Nebraska landscape and the quiet rhythm of the water. This destination is perfect for those who want to avoid the high-density crowds often found at larger reservoirs.

Location & Surroundings

The park is conveniently located just nine miles north of Ogallala, Nebraska, within the unique Sandhills ecosystem. While the surrounding plains are vast, the park itself is tucked into a sheltered area that provides protection from the wind. Its proximity to Highway 61 and I-80 ensures that even large rigs can navigate to the sites with minimal stress. The surrounding area features dramatic views of the massive Kingsley Dam structure.

Amenities & Park Features

RVers will find a mix of electric hookup sites and primitive areas suitable for various camping styles. These sites are often shaded by mature trees, providing a cool respite during the summer months. The facilities include:

  • Modern restrooms and coin-operated showers
  • A convenient dump station for self-contained units
  • Well-maintained boat ramps and docks

These features are designed to facilitate easy access to the water for anglers and paddlers alike.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw here is the world-class trout fishing, as the cold waters flowing from the dam support a healthy fish population year-round. However, there are several other activities to enjoy nearby:

  • Exploring the white sand beaches of Lake McConaughy
  • Winter eagle watching near the open waters of the dam
  • Visiting the historical Front Street in Ogallala for a taste of the Old West

These local highlights provide plenty of variety for those planning a multi-day stay in the region.

Who This Park Is Best For

This recreation area is best suited for RVers who value serenity and outdoor recreation over luxury resort amenities. It is a fantastic choice for kayakers and anglers looking for glass-like water conditions and a slower pace of life. If your ideal trip involves a quiet campfire, a fishing rod, and a night spent under the bright stars of the Nebraska sky, this state park offers exactly the experience you are looking for.

Beautiful campgrounds. Sunsets are magical. Water for our fresh water tank was supplied by the absolutely fantastic host. Campgrounds are clean and well maintained. Very quiet and out of the way. Definitely will stay here again!

The toilets don’t have showers, but they’re clean! Pretty place. Wish lake access was easier from the campground.

It’s as nice as possible for a man made lake where you can’t see through the water at all. People in Nebraska are much nicer and more friendly than a lot of places. Prices at the store feel like you went backwards in a Time Machine. We visited in April so the boating and activities really get going in the summer.

We saw a lot of eagles flying and sitting on the ice. Some were fairly close. There is a very nice building to watch from. Good telescope for public use. A very helpful host in the building.
