Historic Lake Scott State Park is a surprising oasis in the Kansas plains. Tucked away in a deep canyon north of Scott City, this park offers a lush, green landscape that feels worlds away from the surrounding prairie. It is widely recognized for its striking natural beauty and rich history, providing a serene and cool environment for RV travelers seeking a scenic break from the open highway.
Location & Surroundings
The park is situated in a rugged canyon carved by Ladder Creek, offering a unique geological profile of craggy limestone bluffs and wooded groves. The 100-acre spring-fed lake is the centerpiece, surrounded by nearly 1,000 acres of protected parkland. This secluded location creates a shaded microclimate that is highly prized by visitors looking to escape the heat while enjoying the unique topography of western Kansas.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground provides several loops with electric and water hookups suitable for various RV sizes, including larger rigs. Guests have access to modern bathhouses with showers, a convenient dump station, and a seasonal concessions area for supplies. For recreation, the park features a designated swimming beach, boat ramps, and multiple docks for those looking to enjoy the calm, spring-fed waters for fishing or paddling.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
History is a major draw here, specifically the El Cuartelejo ruins, which are the remains of the northernmost Indian pueblo in the United States. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore miles of multi-use trails, such as the Ogallala Trail, or take a short drive to see the towering chalk formations at Monument Rocks. The park is also a premier spot for bird watching and seasonal trout fishing.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for nature photographers and history enthusiasts who appreciate a slower pace and scenic views. Because of the easy water access and onsite playground, it is also a fantastic choice for families. It serves as a perfect multi-day retreat for travelers who prefer the rugged charm of a state park over the high-density environment of a commercial RV resort.

We needed a place to stop driving cross Kansas and I remembered this State park from childhood, so we decided to park here with our camper van. Everything about it was great. It was clean, it was convenient, it was beautiful!!!!

I didn't even know this park was here until I was looking for camping near Monument Rocks. Gorgeous park in Kansas' badlands, mere miles from Monument Rocks and Castle Rock. Park has its own striking sets of bluffs, a spring-fed lake, and excellent dark skies at night for stargazing. Park also has TWO different historical buildings, including a ruin which is the earliest known building in Kansas (a four hundred year old Pueblo which is the furthest northeast of its kind). Very much enjoyed falling to sleep by the lake under the stars listening to the crickets and coyotes. I did wake up at 2 AM to the sound of raccoons breaking into my Jeep for a mostly empty bag of cheez-its, but that's on me.

This was my second time at the historical Lake and state park. Went back because it's a favorite of mine so far. Great hiking trails, swimming area, and kayaking are some of the best I've seen since my move to Kansas.

An unexpected oasis in western Kansas! My previous experience with this part of the state was a stinky stay in Garden City so this gem surprised me. We booked our campsite online and decided once arriving to move to a different site. The staff kindly allowed us to move at no extra charge. We kayaked the lake and as far as we could go up the creek. The water was so clean! We happily spent a day exploring the Western Vistas Scenic Byway. Park was clean and well patrolled. Amenities were clean. We will be back!

This is quite literally an oasis in the middle of Western Kansas. All around are flat plains & farm or range land. Then you drop into the Scott City Lake, and it's an entirely different ecosystem. A GREAT place to stay while visiting the nearby geologic & historic sites. Highly recommend, we visited in mid May 2025 and the weather was beautiful. I would imagine given its high desert attributes that the best time to visit is spring & fall, however there are very shady and beautiful spots to camp year-round.
