Lake St George
Overview
Lake St George State Park offers a quintessential Maine experience for travelers seeking a peaceful lakeside retreat. Located in the town of Liberty, this park serves as a gateway to the state’s mid-coast region, characterized by rolling hills and deep blue waters. It is renowned for providing a tranquil atmosphere where the sound of loons often fills the evening air. While the park is relatively small, its focus on preserving natural beauty makes it a standout choice for those who want to escape the hustle of more developed resort-style campgrounds.
Location & Surroundings
The park is situated directly on the northwest shore of the shimmering Lake St. George, which spans over 1,300 acres. Its position along Route 3 makes it easily accessible for RVers traveling between Augusta and the coast. The crystal-clear water is a primary draw, offering high visibility that is rare even in Maine. Surrounding the park are dense forests of maple and birch, which provide a scenic canopy that shifts into vibrant colors during the autumn months.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional state park, the amenities focus on enhancing the outdoor experience rather than providing luxury resort facilities. The campground features approximately 40 sites, several of which offer direct water views or easy shore access. Key features available to campers include:
- Modern bathhouses with hot showers and flush toilets.
- A convenient dump station for RVers and potable water fill-up points.
- A public boat launch and a sandy swimming area with a lifeguard.
While there are no electrical or water hookups available at the individual campsites, the park provides a spacious picnic area and a playground for families.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the heart of any stay here. The lake is a premier destination for landlocked salmon and brook trout fishing, attracting anglers from across the region. For those who want to explore beyond the park, the charming coastal town of Belfast is just a short drive away, offering local boutiques and fresh seafood. Additionally, the Liberty Tool Company is a unique local landmark nearby, while hikers can find more rugged trails at the nearby Frye Mountain Wildlife Management Area.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal match for RVers who prioritize a primitive camping experience over modern resort amenities. It is perfect for families who enjoy swimming and paddling, as well as couples looking for a quiet, scenic stopover. Because the sites accommodate smaller to mid-sized rigs best and lack hookups, it is best suited for travelers who are comfortable with boondocking or dry camping while being surrounded by some of Maine’s most beautiful freshwater scenery.

Leaves everywhere — smelled amazing. The lake? Freezing. Didn’t care. Dove in like an Olympic champion with no form or plan. Found a stick roughly the size of a canoe. Tried to bring it home. Human said no. Tragic. Final Thoughts: Cool breeze, crunchy leaves, suspicious chipmunk energy in the distance. 10/10 sniff potential. Would recommend to any dog looking to reinvent himself as a wild forest prince.

Dump station. Water station. Showers are ok but not great (free). Heard and saw multiple generators going in campsites. Undercover campsites. Friendly staff. Kid at the front gate was very knowledgeable. Beautiful lake. Kids and families. The day use area is great for swimming and playground and picnics.

Nice little campground. Nice swimming area in the park. Friendly staff. Decently sized sites.

We had a great time and so did Cocoa. His first time at the beach in 14 years. He slept all the way home. Next time he’s staying home so mom and dad can go swimming. I think we brought him there illegally, I’m not sure. Hopefully ICE doesn’t come and try to take him 😝🤓

Nice, smaller state park. The campground is mostly open grass with space between sites. The staff is friendly and welcoming. There is a swimming area accessed by stairs but no true beach.
