Lake Wallula - COE/Hood Park
Overview
Hood Park sits along the shores of Lake Wallula, a reservoir created by the McNary Dam on the Columbia River. This Army Corps of Engineers facility is a favorite for those seeking a spacious, park-like setting with easy water access. Unlike cramped private parks, the layout here offers plenty of green space and mature shade trees. It serves as a tranquil base for exploring the Tri-Cities area while providing a quiet escape from the urban bustle.
Location & Surroundings
Located just east of Pasco in Burbank, Washington, the park is nestled near the confluence of the Snake and Columbia Rivers. The landscape is characterized by the arid beauty of the high desert, contrasted sharply by the lush, irrigated grounds of the park and the vast blue expanse of the river. Visitors often notice the proximity to the McNary National Wildlife Refuge, which brings an abundance of local waterfowl and migratory birds to the immediate area.
Amenities & Park Features
The park features nearly 70 campsites, many of which offer electric hookups and paved pads suitable for larger rigs. While there are no sewer connections at individual sites, a convenient on-site dump station and potable water are provided. Guests have access to modern restrooms with flush toilets and hot showers. Recreation is central here, with a multi-lane boat ramp, a designated swimming beach, and well-maintained playgrounds for families.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Water sports dominate the activity list, including boating, fishing for walleye or sturgeon, and kayaking along the shoreline. Nature enthusiasts should visit the nearby education center to explore scenic hiking trails and observe local wildlife. For a change of pace, the Tri-Cities region is just a short drive away, offering local wineries, diverse dining options, and the REACH Museum, which highlights the area’s unique geological and nuclear history.
Who This Park Is Best For
Hood Park is an ideal destination for water recreation enthusiasts and families who appreciate a natural, quiet atmosphere. It is particularly well-suited for birdwatchers and photographers due to the thriving ecosystem of the nearby refuge. While it lacks some resort-style luxuries, it is perfect for self-contained RVers who prioritize scenic views, large grassy sites, and a peaceful environment over high-speed internet or organized activities.

We arrived here in the evening and while we were setting up the tent we saw so many spiders everywhere. I was horrified! We wanted to leave right away, but the gates were closed after 10 pm and we couldn't do anything. Also, you could hear the noise from the road, like trucks honking. It took us 3 and a half hours to get to this camp, it was really sad that we wasted so much time. Next morning update: 11 spider at the entrance of my tent 😫

We recently spent 2 days there. It is so beautiful! It was really nice relaxing and listening to all the families having fun The bathrooms are extremely clean. The campground is well taken care of with beautiful views of the water. The reason for 3 stars is the bugs! When the sun starts to set. It turns into an investigation of tiny moths or knats .the spiders are insane. It was sooo bad ! We couldn't have a light on because our rv would fill with them. The entire side of the door looked black from so many bugs. BUT, if you dont mind that. It's a great place to take your family

Very disappointed. We are here for the hottest weekend of the summer, and yet, now we can't go swimming because of leeches and the water's just murky, unless you go way out past some type of slimy stuff to get in deeper water. The spiders and bugs are the worst I've ever seen had a campsite.

I like the park it is peaceful and nice but I would not go swimming there. I went there with my family yesterday for my mom's birthday and we went swimming in the water, about 10-15 minutes in to swimming we had to get out of the water because we all had leaches. We were covered in them and we had to warn another family about the leaches we went to the bathroom to get them off and they were all over the floor. It is nice but do not go swimming in the water or you will get leaches. Definitely not swimming there again.

Me and my husband took our kids to the river. The river was spacious and cooling. But very mud. Bring some good shoes to get in the river. Or if you don't mind the texture of wet mud, then your good to go barefoot.
