Lakeland PRA (Pinehurst Lake Campground)
Overview
Lakeland Provincial Recreation Area hosts the Pinehurst Lake Campground, a destination defined by its untouched boreal forest and expansive water views. This isn't your standard roadside stop; it is a dedicated escape for those who appreciate the quiet rhythms of nature. The campground offers a rustic camping experience that prioritizes peace over luxury, allowing visitors to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with the rugged beauty of Northern Alberta. The atmosphere is one of profound tranquility, where the day is measured by the rising sun and the evening's crackling fire.
Location & Surroundings
Situated southeast of the town of Lac La Biche, the park is nestled within a dense canopy of spruce and poplar that creates a natural sound barrier from the outside world. The highlight of the area is Pinehurst Lake itself, a large, deep body of water known for its clarity and impressive size. The surrounding landscape is part of a vast network of protected lands, providing a continuous habitat for diverse wildlife including moose, deer, and various migratory birds that frequent the pristine shoreline during the summer months.
Amenities & Park Features
As a Provincial Recreation Area, the facilities are designed to support a self-sufficient RV lifestyle. You will find unserviced campsites that offer plenty of privacy and space for larger rigs, though power and water hookups are not available. The park provides essential infrastructure such as a sturdy boat launch for easy lake access and a designated fish cleaning station for the day's catch. To maintain the wilderness feel, amenities are limited to pit toilets, hand-pump water, and fire pits, making it a true off-grid destination for seasoned travelers.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Fishing is the primary draw here, with anglers frequently visiting to catch trophy-sized Northern Pike and Walleye in the deep lake waters. Beyond the water, the Lakeland area features an extensive backcountry trail system perfect for hiking or mountain biking through the thick forest. For a touch of local history and culture, the nearby Lac La Biche Mission offers a glimpse into the region's heritage, while the town itself provides necessary supplies, fuel, and local dining options for those staying for an extended duration.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for adventurous RVers who carry their own power and water and seek a deep connection with the outdoors. It is a haven for paddlers and anglers looking for a premier lake experience without the crowds of more developed commercial parks. If you prefer the sound of wind in the trees and the haunting call of a loon over the hum of a highway, Pinehurst Lake is your perfect Northern Alberta retreat for a quiet weekend or a rugged wilderness stay.

Great campground. Good beach. Sites are a little open and some are prone to flooding in the rain.

Washroom has no tap. No dump site for RV .The lake has weeds. The campsites are nice. Water only in pumping well.

It was our first visit to this new provincial campground and we will definitely be back. We decided to go camping last minute for the long weekend and this was one of only places with availability. Thought I’d leave the pros and cons. Pros: - really spacious campsites amongst a gorgeous landscape. Our site was private and well treed in. - great beach with lots of space and they even provide life jackets. We brought our paddle board and had a blast. - outhouses were cleaned every morning which we really appreciated. - water quality of the lake was excellent. Spotted pelicans and loons. - northern lights made an appearance our first night - we realized we forgot pillows 😔 and made the 40 minute drive to Lac La Biche. Thankfully Fields saved the day. We decided to make the most of it and grabbed lunch at the golf course. We had a really wonderful meal at Pasture + Market with a beautiful lake view. Now we want to come back and bring our clubs. Cons - no water hookups and no shower houses which is really unfortunate. Being in bear country there should also be a dish wash area otherwise campers in tents are forced to dump dish water. - poor cell reception which is fine but be sure to have your map app loaded before you’re within 30 minutes of arrival and pay attention to the route for when you leave. - store is convenient and well stocked for the small size but I felt horrible for the person working by herself all weekend. There were long lineups for ice cream every time we visited. There really should be two staff members for peak days. - playground was cute but quite small and geared for five and under. My kids were bored within minutes of visiting.

Pinehurst Lake campground is a hidden gem. It is very clean and well run. Every camping spot has electricity which is a nice perk, and even the outhouses are new and modern with motion sensor lights. The fishing is great, and the beach is clean.
